Pokemon GO Cliff Lineup And Counters (October 2020)

The Pokemon GO Halloween festivities are just around the corner, but first fans of the mobile AR experience need to work through the current Team GO Rocket takeover. The current event introduced a brand new type of Egg in the game in addition to rolling out all of the usual grunts and Team GO Rocket bosses for trainers to challenge.

Players who want to earn as many rewards and Shadow Pokemon encounters as possible during the event are going to need to face off against each of the Team GO Rocket bosses before the event concludes. Before making it all the way to a fight with Giovanni, Pokemon GO players will first need to defeat Sierra, Arlo, and Cliff.

Cliff brings some interesting challenges to the table, but luckily trainers have probably already prepared for most of them. The main change to Cliff’s lineup this time around comes from the first slot. During October 2020, players can reliably assume that Cliff will start every fight with Omanyte. This is great news and means that players can pretty easily prepare a roster that will easily get through the first slot and learn some information about slots two and three before a roster adjustment and an immediate rematch.

Because there are so many different Pokemon that Cliff can throw out at players, keep in mind that taking a loss on the first go and gaining some information is something players might have to do. Building the perfect counter roster is much easier once players know which opponents are in the second and third slots. With that in mind, here are the recommended counters for each of the different scenarios that might play out. Be sure to adjust your strategy accordingly, based on what Pokemon Ciff is bringing to the battlefield against your lineup.

Cliff’s Roster

First Pokemon: Omanyte

Second Pokemon: Machamp or Omastar or Electivire

Third Pokemon: Tyranitar or Swampert or Torterra

That should be all the information trainers need to take down Cliff this time around. Be sure to stock up on potions and make sure your lineup of counters is powered up and equipped with the best move set possible for the matchup. There are definitely a number of other Pokemon that can work as substitutes for this ideal roster, but most players shouldn’t have much trouble assembling the team recommended above.

All of those Pokemon are very relevant to the current Pokemon GO PvE and PvP metagame, so it’s worth investing in them beyond this fight anyway. Use TMs and Rare Candy wisely if they are needed to take down this challenger.

For now, Pokemon GO trainers should be able to head out into the world (or play from home) and continue catching the best Unova Pokemon in the game and getting closer to that complete Pokedex. Check back for more Pokemon GO updates closer to the event. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
