Fans of 1999’s Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back will be excited to see Niantic’s plans for Pokémon GO to end the month of February. In celebration of the film’s CGI remake, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, coming to Netflix on February 27th, Armored Mewtwo will be making a return to the game, as well as the clone Pokémon that famously appeared in the movie.

From Tuesday, February 25th at 4 pm EST, until Monday, March 2nd at 4pm EST, Armored Mewtwo will return to five star raids, while clone Pokémon, including Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise, will begin appearing in four star raids. Players will also get a chance to catch a clone Pikachu through the game’s snapshot feature, similar to the method used for catching Smeargle.

Clone Pokémon can be distinguished by the strange dark markings that can be found throughout their bodies. Despite clone Pokémon first appearing over twenty years ago in the first Pokémon movie, this is the very first time that players will be able to catch them in a Pokémon game.

There will also be a special raid event on Sunday, March 1st, in which Nidorino and Gengar will appear in raids wearing party hats. This is clearly a nod to the fact that Nidorino and Gengar were the very first Pokémon depicted, as they appeared in the initial intro screen in the original Pokémon Red and Green Japanese Game Boy games.

Not only are these events in place to celebrate the release of Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, but February 27th also happens to be Pokémon Day, the day that the original Japanese Pokémon games were first released. On top of the above promotions, players will also be granted two special trades per day during the event, instead of the usual limit of one.

This news is certainly exciting for Pokémon fans, especially considering that Niantic is giving players the ability to catch clone Pokémon for the first time ever, as well as another chance at catching Armored Mewtwo, one of the more difficult raid Pokémon to appear in the game. Continual updates and promotions like these are a big reason why so many people are still playing Pokémon GO two-and-half-years following its initial release.
