Pokémon GO’s October 2021 Community Day takes place on Saturday, October 9, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time. Duskull, the featured Pokémon for the month, has been in the mainline series of Pokémon since Generation III, and it has been a popular Ghost-type since its introduction.

As with most Pocket Monsters, there is plenty of fascinating information about Duskull and its evolutionary line. Some of this information exclusively pertains to either the mainline games or Pokémon GO, but it is interesting nonetheless. If fans are looking to catch the beloved Ghost-type and find its shiny, there are certain things they may be interested in knowing about it.

8 Shuppet’s Counterpart

With the same base stat totals and pure Ghost-typing, Duskull and Shuppet are counterparts to each other. This is also true of their second stage evolutions: Dusclops and Banette, respectively. This connection got shaken up a bit, though, with the introduction of Dusknoir in Generation IV.

Shuppet was left without a third-stage evolution, although Banette did get a Mega Evolution in Generation VI. Although this Mega Evolution makes a Pokémon with one of the scariest designs even more frightening, it is not a standard evolution. Regardless, Duskull and Shuppet are still considered counterparts.

7 The Grim Reaper

It is no secret that Dusknoir has a connection to the Grim Reaper. Indeed, the item needed to evolve Dusclops in the main series is called a Reaper Cloth. The connections, however, go much deeper than this. Dusknoir’s Pokédex entries from Platinum, all of Generation V, Omega Ruby, and X state, “It is said to take lost spirits into its pliant body and guide them home.”

It is also known to receive transmissions from the spirit world, taking people there at the spirit world’s will. This duty sounds very similar to that of the Grim Reaper, and Dusknoir is clearly Pokémon’s version.

6 Cautionary Tales

Several of Duskull’s Pokédex entries say that it loves to make children cry. Others say, “If it finds bad children who won’t listen to their parents, it will spirit them away…”, although these entries end with, “…or so it’s said.” This indicates that it may not be true, but parents tell their children this in order to make them behave. While Duskull is a scary Pokémon, frightening children as it pleases, it may not be as sinister as the stories tell. When it evolves, though, it becomes much more terrifying.

5 The Scary Background Of Dusclops

The second-stage evolution of Duskull, Dusclops, has some of the creepiest Pokédex entries in the series. They tell of Dusclops being able to act like a black hole, absorbing anything through its mouth. In addition, it is capable of hypnotizing its enemies and making them do its bidding.

Plenty of Ghost-type Pokémon have eerie entries in the games, but not all of them can threaten destruction in the same way Dusclops can. If it existed in real life, it would be a scary Ghost-type people wouldn’t want to catch.

4 Pure Ghost-Type

Many Ghost Pokémon have a second typing, do not evolve, or are a part of a two-stage evolutionary line. The Duskull line, though, is the only pure Ghost-type family that has three evolutionary stages. This was not true in Generation III, though, because Dusknoir had not yet entered the series.

As such, the Duskull line holds a unique place in the Pokémon world. However, this does not make Dusknoir the strongest fully evolved Ghost-type Pokémon, though it certainly is not the worst either. Rather, these Pokémon are ideal for inexperienced players to use to gain a quick advantage before moving on to better Pocket Monsters with more varied and balanced attacks.

3 Awkward Bulk

In the main series games, Dusknoir has some incredible defensive stats, which can initially feel very intriguing for a trainer. Both its Defense and Special Defense share the same high value, meaning it can take both Physical and Special attacks equally well. However, it suffers from a terrible HP stat.

This puts the Pokémon in an awkward position because, while its high defensive stats reduce the amount of HP that gets taken, there is a more limited amount of HP in general. In conclusion, its bulk is reasonable, but the stark difference in stat values is unfortunate.

2 Dusknoir’s Community Day Move

When it comes to the main series games, Shadow Ball is one of the most powerful Ghost moves in Pokémon. It is also incredible in Pokémon GO. The attack is usually one of Dusknoir’s best options, but it has been absent from its move pool in Pokémon GO. With its Community Day, though, that changes.

Up until now, Dusknoir’s only Ghost-type charged move has been Ominous Wind. This move is not terrible with its chance to raise Attack and Defense, but it is inferior to Shadow Ball’s sheer power. It remains to be seen if Dusknoir will be viable in PVP as a result, but the addition of Shadow Ball can only help it.

1 The Pokémon GO Stat Adjustment

Though Shadow Ball is one of Dusknoir’s best options in the main series games, it is brought down a bit because Dusknoir’s higher offensive stat is its Attack, and Shadow Ball is a Special move. Stats in Pokémon GO, however, are simplified a bit. In the mobile game, there is only one Attack stat as opposed to two.

As such, Dusknoir can now use Ghost moves like Shadow Ball much more effectively with a fairly high Attack stat. This is also true for other moves that are Special in the main series, though Dusknoir does not have many great move options to choose from in Pokémon GO.
