Pokemon GO has made plenty of changes in the recent past, including introducing remote raid battles, but one planned change would mean alienating a portion of the playerbase. Thankfully for those fans, they can at least enjoy the game for a while longer.

Pokemon GO has been around for years now, and as those years have gone by, smartphones have continued to evolve. Unfortunately for those using older, 32-bit phones, Niantic announced that it would soon be ending support for these devices.

Since that announcement, however, Niantic seems to have thought twice about its sudden decision. Players with 32-bit devices had until the start of August to either acquire a new phone or give up on Pokemon GO, but Niantic has now decided to place a hold on its plans. According to a blog post, the developer has pushed it back to a vague ‘TBD’ in order to ‘collect more data on impacted devices.’

As a mobile game developer, Niantic is likely quite aware that a large list of phones would be forced to stop playing the game, so it’s interesting that the company seems to need more time to look into this. While the blog post’s update makes no mention of it, it’s also possible that Niantic quickly became aware of the fan backlash after its initial announcement.

Many players took to social media to complain that this change would mean they would have to stop playing Pokemon GO, or otherwise spend a considerable amount of money on a new phone. This is especially difficult during this time, when many people are out of work due to the coronavirus pandemic. The drop-off of these players would likely also make quite a dent in Niantic’s bottom line, as fewer people would be playing and making purchases via microtransactions.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time users on certain mobile devices have found themselves unable to play. Many iPhone users likely understand the current frustration, as Niantic was banning Pokemon GO players using Apple devices using iOS 12. While no game can hold onto the past forever, hopefully Niantic can come to a solution that will keep all of its players happy, even if only for a while longer.
