Players taking part in an early access version of the new Pikmin mobile game being developed by Nintendo and Niantic have been revealed online, giving fans a better picture of what to expect from the game when it launches. The new augmented reality title comes from the same team that created Pokémon GO, which should inspire confidence. After all, Pokémon GO continues to be a big success, with the mobile title earning $1 billion in revenue in 2020.

Nintendo and Niantic announced the upcoming Pikmin mobile app earlier this week, revealing that it will use the same real-world AR technology used in Pokémon GO. According to a press release revealing the project, the two companies are partnering to work on multiple projects involving Nintendo’s biggest video game franchises. The Pikmin game is set to be the first release as part of this arrangement.

More details have emerged about the upcoming augmented reality Pikmin game that is in development. Niantic revealed earlier today that an early access version of the title is currently available to test in Singapore, prompting many fans to download the game and try it out. Eurogamer reports that a number of gameplay mechanics and features have been detailed as a result. This includes the fact that the experience will be more passive than Pokémon GO, with players generation Step Energy from walking. This energy is used to grow seedlings into Pikmin, while nectar causes them to bloom into different colors. Pikmin will also be able to be sent out on expeditions to gather seedlings from places that players have already visited.

The Pikmin mobile game is not the only big gaming franchise to be adapted as an augmented reality experience over the last few years. The likes of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and The Witcher: Monster Slayer have emerged, which similarly involve exploring the real world to complete quests and interact with NPCs.

While other AR games have attempted to capitalize on the success of Pokémon GO since its launch five years ago, none have managed to truly compete with it. The combination of Niantic’s solid gameplay and the strong appeal of the Pokémon franchise gave the app an unbeatable edge. Nintendo will likely be hoping that the Pikmin series can capture at least some of that success.
