It’s another week of the Pokémon GO Throwback Challenge tasks, and this time we’re reminiscing on the Hoenn region. This covers the Ruby & Sapphire era of games that introduced the third generation of Pokémon. For some fans this is where they stopped, as the dream of the ’90s felt long gone. For others this is where they started, fresh-faced with a Game Boy Advance as their first handheld. Whichever camp you fall in, you need to start by catching a Rock-type Pokémon.

The quests of the Throwback Challenge series reference the events of the main games, specifically the Gym Leaders. That’s why Trainers are asked to capture a Rock-type in step one. This represents Rock-type Gym Leader Roxanne, whose signature Pokémon is actually Nosepass.

Nosepass are spawning more frequently as part of the Hoenn event, so you might have already gotten one and moved on to later steps. But if Nosepass is giving you trouble, there’s another Rock-type spawning in droves: Aron.

Aron looks like a Steel type with its silver body, and it is one. It just also happens to double as a Rock-type. So when Nosepass feels shy, feel free to skip it and go with Aron. You’ll be on your way to that Fire Punch Groudon in no time.

Eventually he realized he liked talking to game developers and discovering weird new indie games. Now he brings that love of weird games to TheGamer, where he tries to talk about them in clickable ways so you grow to love them too. When he’s not stressing over how to do that, he’s a DM, Cleric of Bahamut, cosplay boyfriend, and occasional actor.
