Players of Pokémon GO have been left confused following news that the mobile AR game is collaborating with award-winning singer, Ed Sheeran. The Pokémon brand has joined forces with a number of musical icons this year thanks to the recent launch of star-studded musical tribute Pokémon 25: The Album, but the announcement of Pokémon GO teaming up with Sheeran hasn’t been well-received by the game’s fans.

Pokémon GO is known for its large-scale community events and special promotions, which have often seen in-game tie-in content used to commemorate holidays and even other Pokémon-related releases. This year GO players enjoyed in-game content to celebrate the launch of the most recent Pokémon movie, Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, which landed on Netflix earlier this year, but that’s not the only franchise tie-in. The Niantic game is currently celebrating the upcoming release of the next Pokémon games coming to Nintendo Switch. In recognition of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, out this Friday, the mobile game is now running the Pokémon GO Diamond and Pearl Celebration Event. Beginning today, November 16, and ending on November 21, the event will see Sinnoh Pokémon appear in the wild more often.

Both Ed Sheeran and Pokémon GO announced news of their collaboration on social media, and early fan reactions aren’t positive. While neither party has yet disclosed what the partnership will look like or when it may take place, many have reacted negatively to the reveal, questioning what relevance the singer has to the Pokémon game. Twitter users jmartsacto and SetBackJack are just two of the fans responding with memes asking why, while bpapa101’s simple question of “what” has also seen appreciation on Twitter. One of the most popular replies at the time of writing comes from OMG_WHISKEY, who responded to the announcement with: “No one asked for this.” While lots of responses are negative, not everyone is displeased with the news, with many fans of Sheeran already excited for the collaboration.

what

No one asked for this.

Fans of Pokémon GO may be right to be confused, as it’s not clear how Sheeran or his music may be integrated into the game. Music isn’t a heavy feature of the Pokémon GO experience, nor is celebrity appearances, so how the partnership may play out is up for speculation. This isn’t the first time an Ed Sheeran collaboration has left people confused, with the singer famously cameoing in HBO’s Game of Thrones’ first episode of season seven, entitled “Dragonstone,” an appearance that left fans of the show similarly baffled.

Early responses to the Pokémon GO and Ed Sheeran collaborative may be underwhelming, but fans may change their minds when more details are revealed. If the partnership brings new items, challenges, and even new Pokémon to the game, then it may turn out to be more of a positive experience than expected. Fans can keep an eye on Niantic’s and Sheeran’s social channels for future Pokémon GO updates and more news on the partnership.
