Even with the global pandemic still ravaging many parts of the world, Niantic’s Pokemon GO is one of the few mobile titles that has been able to adapt and thrive during these challenging times. As restrictions are lowering in some countries, Niantic made announcements of incoming changes regarding Pokemon GO’s pandemic features. This has incited the players’ rage, recently leading the public to harass and chase off one of the title’s employees on Twitter.

The changes to the Pokemon-collecting title involved many of the extra bonuses Niantic implemented as incentives for gamers to play the game even while stuck within their homes. Naturally, some Pokemon GO players were not happy about the upcoming revisions, given that the bonuses helped keep them socially distant from others, and also allowed players located in rural areas to be able to enjoy many features of Pokemon GO. However, harassing an official employee does not seem like the proper way for fans to go through in order to make their concerns heard.

On TheSilphRoad subreddit, user JULTAR collated screenshots about how one of Pokemon GO’s employees was forced to delete their Twitter account due to the public’s reaction to the pandemic features changes. Senior Marketing Manager Liz George (@itslizgeorge on Twitter) has removed their presence from the social media platform, following threatening replies and responses from the avid Pokemon GO community. As of the moment, the Twitter account no longer exists, and no posts are currently visible.

Reddit user JALTAR was also able to confirm the news via Twitter user Chaka Explains It All (@princessology), who is a friend of George and also a social community manager. Chaka Explains It All posted a series of tweets that aggressively disapproved of how Pokemon GO fans treated George, and has since been defending George online. Replies on JALTAR’s thread opened up conversation about online etiquette, and the proper avenues of bringing up player concerns. Many noted that Niantic should have asked for proper player feedback before implementing changes, while others said that anger over these updates does not justify treating an employee so harshly.

Given how hectic Pokemon GO’s schedule is every month, with the upcoming July Community Day and Pokemon GO Fest 2021, players can only hope that Niantic will listen to their grievances and adjust the changes accordingly. However, hopefully the community will also take a step back and learn more productive ways to air out their issues without having to resort to such negative behavior.

Pokemon GO is playable on Android and iOS.
