With New Pokémon Snap’s April 30th release date rapidly approaching, Niantic and The Pokémon Company are giving players of Pokémon GO reason to celebrate with a brand new in-game event.
Starting from Thursday 29th April at 10:00 BST, the New Pokémon Snap celebration event will give players the chance to capture rare Pokémon, including for the very first time the shiny form of Smeargle. This event will run through to the end of the weekend and come to a close on Sunday 2nd May at 20:00 BST.
Wild Pokémon available during the event will change to feature creatures native to New Pokémon Snap’s Lental region. This selection includes Ducklett, Lotad and Cacnea for overworld spawns and Meganium, Vaporeon and Trapinch from raid battles. Alongside these spawns, special research tasks with a photography theme will be available. Completing these tasks will reward players with more Lental native Pokémon spawns such as Dodrio, Skarmory and the iconic Venusaur.
The Pokémon GO style shop will also feature camera-themed avatar items at no cost, so players should be sure to take advantage and snag these limited customization items while they can.
As exciting as these additions will no doubt be for fans of Pokémon GO, the highlight of this event will surely be the debut of the painter Pokémon Smeargle’s shiny form. This incredibly rare catch will only be available for the duration of the celebration event, meaning that any players that want to grab one for themselves during the event need to do so promptly before that 20:00 Sunday deadline. Smeargle is a rare creature in Pokémon GO under normal circumstances. A generation two pocket monster introduced in Pokémon Gold & Silver’s Johto region, this artistic Pokémon is only available through the GO Snapshot feature, which allows players to take augmented reality photos of their favorite monsters. When doing so, there is a very small chance that a Smeargle may appear to photobomb the player, appearing in the corner of a shot and then subsequently spawning in the overworld right next to them.
Finding a shiny Smeargle will be no easy task, however. Smeargle will only be making appearances “a limited number of times” across the span of the event, and the shiny version will disappear after the event concludes. With a healthy dose of luck, one of those limited encounters may shine.
Pokémon GO was released by Niantic, Inc. in 2016 and has since gone on to be a colossal financial success for the company and Nintendo. The game has received consistent updates since it launched and has seen new generations of monsters added to the Pokédex as well as compatibility with the mainline Pokémon series for the Nintendo Switch.
New Pokémon Snap is a long-awaited sequel to the N64 classic Pokémon Snap. Players will be able to photograph Pokémon in their natural habitats and share them with friends via Nintendo Switch Online. The game is being developed by Bandai Namco and published by Nintendo. New Pokémon Snap will be released for the Nintendo Switch on April 30th.
