There’s no denying that Pokemon GO has evolved in some amazing ways since its original launch. Although the game was a national phenomenon in that first summer, it was jam-packed with bugs and half-baked systems that needed some time to grow. Much of that growth has happened in the last few years, but the game obviously has dropped some players along the way.

In an effort to win back those lapsed trainers, and bring in some new ones, Pokemon GO is planning a referral system that will encourage active players to get other gamers invested in the mobile AR app. Some exciting motivation should be provided in the form of in-game rewards (including Egg Incubators) for both the recruiter and the new or returning player when the system is in place.

This recruit-a-friend sort of system has worked well in other games (just take a look at World of Warcraft’s old system that offered a two-seater mount) and it seems like a smart move for PoGO to give it a shot. Like most major systems in the game, it is going to start with a testing period specific to one region, so gamers around the world will have to wait a little longer before they can start recruiting friends and earning rewards.

Do I get bonuses too or just the new/returning player?

At this point, it sounds like both the new/returning player and the person who recruited them will receive bonuses as the new/returning player hit certain milestones.

What bonuses can be earned with the referral program?

The specific bonuses haven’t been announced yet, but they will include Pokemon encounters, rare Candy, Incubators, and more. Once the system goes live for testing in Australia, players should quickly get a full list of the specifics.

“When you refer a friend to enjoy Pokémon GO—whether it’s their first time playing or they’re returning after a break—they’ll receive rewards like Pokémon encounters, Rare Candy, Incubators, and more as they hit milestones on their adventure—and so will you.”

When can I start referring friends?

As veteran PoGO players may expect, this system is going to roll out slowly and be tested in select regions first. Niantic confirmed that users in Australia will be the first to gain referral codes. The future rollout of the system will depend on how smoothly things go down under and what sort of feedback is gathered during that testing periods.

For previous systems like this, the test periods have ranged from as short as a week or two all the way up to a handful of months before a full rollout. At this point, there’s no real way to predict how long it will take before the referral system is available worldwide.

“Like other features we’ve launched in the past, we’ll be tuning the referral program over time in order to make the process as easy and exciting as possible. Trainers in Australia will be the first to receive referral codes that they can share with friends.”
