The dreaded Giovanni, leader of Team Rocket, is rocking a new team in Pokémon GO. Trainers should be used to his switches by now, but this month brings a slight difference. This is way old news at this point, but Giovanni always leads with his trusty Persian. Only unlike it’s Pokémon anime counterpart, this kitty does way more than just sit there. It can attack very quickly and whittle down even your most bukly Pokémon. Giovanni’s second Pokémon can be either Cloyster, Steelix, or Hippowdon. Finally, the boss will end by throwing out Raikou itself.

The chart about is a nice way to lay things out simply, but the Pokémon recommendations could be a little stronger. Here are a few suggestions that might help you pull off a more certain victory.

Giovanni Counters

Giovanni’s Persian is more terrifying than any Persian has the right to be. If it comes with its Scratch attack, it can really shred through your lead Pokémon. That’s why you might want to consider starting with defense over strength. Tyranitar is always a solid choice, and especially helpful when it comes to withstanding Scratch. Otherwise, Lucario or Machamp can do some heavy damage to Persian and break Giovanni’s shields.

The second Pokémon will cause your strategy to change. Fortunately, both Cloyster and Steelix are weak to Fighting-type attacks. Lucario and Machamp are great picks again, provided you have both and/or used Tyranitar to beat Persian. Swampert can also come in clutch against Steelix and maybe even Hippowdon due to its unique typing and bulk. The reason why pure Water-types like Poliwrath aren’t recommended is because both Hippowdon and Steelix can use Thunder Fang.

Finally, there’s Raikou. It’s only weak to Ground-type attacks. That makes Garchomp the clear choice. Garchomp will also be great against Steelix and Hippowdon if needed. In the event that, like many, you’re still working on the candy for Garchomp, then Rhyperior can come to the rescue.

The Final Team

A good team in the end can look like this: Tyranitar/Lucario/Garchomp or Machamp/Swampert/Rhyperior. As usual, a good Fighting-type with a fast charge move is essential. So is a Pokémon that can take some hits without fainting. Finally, you need a Ground-type to finish the fight. Keep a team like this at the ready, use those charge moves, and good luck!
