This Pokemon GO guide helps new Pokemon trainers be successful in gym battles by explaining all the different Pokemon types, their strengths, and weaknesses.
The millions of people that have been playing Pokemon games on Nintendo handhelds for years are probably very familiar with the rock-paper-scissors combat system at work in the games. However, with Pokemon GO downloaded over 75 million times since its launch at the beginning of the month, there’s bound to be many players new to the franchise and unaware of its fine details. For Pokemon GO players new to the franchise that may not know what a dragon-type Pokemon is super effective against or why they shouldn’t put Charmander up against Squirtle, we have you covered.
Basically, each Pokemon in Pokemon GO is assigned one or two types, which make it vulnerable to specific attacks. Each Pokemon has two attacks at its disposal, and these attacks are assigned types as well. So, for example, if Bulbasaur, a grass-type Pokemon, is hit with a fire-type attack, it will take more damage than usual.
This also works the other way, with Bulbsaur’s grass-type status making it strong against certain types as well. If a water-type Pokemon like Squirtle is fighting a Bulbasaur and hits it with a water-type attack, it will be less effective than other attacks. Learning how all the types interact with each other is key to winning Pokemon gym battles, and will allow players to be more strategic when taking on a gym.
Without further ado, here are all 18 Pokemon types in Pokemon GO, and their strengths and weaknesses:
