An upcoming holiday event in the popular mobile game Pokémon GO will add new festive costumes and new ice-type Pokémon. Niantic has been celebrating the holidays since the game’s release in 2016. Taking place in December, each holiday event has come with its own set of bonuses and perks, such as particular items, buffs, costumes, and Pokémon. It looks like Niantic will be continuing the tradition with a holiday event this year, as well.

This isn’t the only new Pokémon GO announcement to arrive in the past week. It was recently unveiled that the Galarian form of Mr. Mime, and its evolutionary form, Mr. Rime, would be coming to the mobile game through a special research event. Players also received various rewards if they played during The Game Awards last Thursday. However, no holiday-related news had been announced until now.

According to a new post on the official Pokémon GO website, the forthcoming holiday event will last from December 22 at 8 a.m. to December 31 at 10 p.m. All times are local to the player. This event includes festive costumes for three Pokémon, Vanillite’s debut in the game, and winter-themed items for avatars. The costumes are specifically for Pikachu, Deliberd, and Cubchoo. Additionally, wild ice-type Pokémon will appear more frequently.

❄️ ’Tis the season to be even more jolly! The #PokemonGOHoliday event is back, Trainers! Look forward to costumed Pokémon, Ice-type Pokémon new to Pokémon GO, event-exclusive Field Research, avatar items, and a blizzard of bonuses! ❄️ https://t.co/2pp9TvAi96 pic.twitter.com/Kerk1zVWQU

Boxes and AR Mapping tasks exclusive to the event will be available, as well. Fortunate players may possibly come across a Shiny Jynx during a raid battle. Some of the Pokémon appearing in raid battles include Alolan Sandshrew, Dewgong, Jynx, Sneasel, Swinub, Walrein, Cubchoo, and Cryogonal. Specific Pokémon will hatch from 5 km eggs, as well, such as Seel, Swinub, Smoochum, Snorunt, Snover, and Vanillite. Bonuses such as doubled raid XP, doubled Star Piece duration, and doubled Lucky Egg duration will occur for a day or two as the event happens.

Given that every December has had a special holiday event, it was highly likely that Niantic would eventually make this announcement. However, it was entirely unknown what the event would entail. The arrival of the ice-cream-inspired Vanillite is somewhat exciting (even if fans hate it) as are the festive costumes for Pikachu, Deliberd, and Cubchoo. It was expected that players would receive costumes and at least one new ice-type Pokémon, as that has typically become the standard for the game’s holiday events.

What is disappointing is that there are costumes for only three Pokémon. It could have been a greater incentive to play during the event if there were more timely, winter-themed rewards, but most of the benefits exist purely as functional bonuses, such as doubled candy catches and doubled raid XP. Although it’s nice to have functional bonuses, the specific, event-exclusive perks are always the most exciting components of any Pokémon GO event.
