Pokemon GO How Did Coronavirus Impact Player Activity

In the months since social distancing and stay-at-home orders became the new normal in many states and countries, games that put an emphasis on outdoor activities have had to make a lot of changes to try and retain their playerbases. Pokemon GO’s core mechanics are all built around exploration, activity, and community-building; so obviously that mobile experience was in a bit of trouble when players could no longer venture out with groups of friends to tackle Legendary bosses at Battle Raids.

That said, Niantic responded quickly and PoGO implemented a ton of play-at-home features right away to keep players engaged. The game also adjusted its strategy for events and shifted to a more play-from-anywhere friendly approach. As lockdowns begin to come to an end in some states, it’s interesting to take a look back and see how effective the Pokemon GO changes were in keeping players active and engaged.

During a recent Niantic press event, Game Rant had the chance to ask Niantic Founder and CEO John Hanke how much the company (and Pokemon GO) were impacted by the ongoing spread of COVID-19. In response, Hanke explained that there was initially a negative impact on usage on all Niantic products. As the company adapted the games (all games, including PoGO and Wizards Unite) things bounced back. At this point, Hanke said the company is generally doing ok. He also confirmed that the physical movement part of the game was really impacted by the limitations on movement in communities.
