Pokemon GO How to Beat and Catch Heatran

Although many fans were hoping Pokemon GO would introduce the legendary Dark-type Darkrai when Cresselia rotated out of the raid roster, it appears that the legendary Fire- and Steel-type Heatran is set to follow suit. Of course, since Heatran is a gen 4 legendary, many fans will still be clamoring to add it to their roster.

To that effect, we here at Game Rant have compiled this guide to help new and veteran players alike take down this Pokemon GO Behemoth. Simply follow this guide to beat and catch Heatran. Players will want to act quickly, however, as Heatran is set to rotate out on January 15, 2019.

Heatran is a gen 4 legendary with a max Raid Boss CP of 44905 and a max capture CP of 2145 (level 20 encounter) or 2681 (in a level 25 weather-boosted encounter.) The suggested veteran player count is 3, though the more the merrier, and Pokemon GO novices would likely do better in groups of at least 8.

Heatran’s Move set

As a dual Fire- and Steel-type, Heatran has access to the following moves:

  • Fire Spin (quick Fire-type move)
  • Bug Bite (quick Bug-type move)
  • Fire Blast (charged, 1-bar Fire-type move)
  • Stone Edge (charged, 1-bar Rock-type move)
  • Iron Head (charged, 2-bar Steel-type move)

Heatran actually has a rather lackluster move set compared to other Tier 5 raid bosses. Pokemon GO Players may want to watch out for Fire Spin/Iron Head Heatran, but a Bug Bite/Stone Edge Heatran would be the easiest to counter. Without excellent moves with his typing, this becomes Heatran’s biggest weakness.

Weather

As usual, Pokemon Go fans will want to be wary of the weather, as it can either be a great advantage or disadvantage. It is boosted in both Sunny and Snowy weather (because of its dual typing), while Cloudy and Rainy weather will boost Fighting-type and Water-type counters, respectively.

Counters

Heatran’s greatest strength is his role as a tank, because its typing makes the following types not very effective x2: Bug, Fairy, Grass, Ice, Poison, and Steel. This Pokemon GO Raid Boss is also resistant to Dragon, Flying, Normal, and Psychic.

Players will want to face Heatran then with an assortment of Fighting, Ground, and/or Water-types. As a result, here are the best counters (and their move sets) to take against this legendary:

  • Groudon (Mud Shot/Earthquake)
  • Rhyperior (Mud-Slap/Earthquake)
  • Swampert (Mud Shot/Earthquake)
  • Gyarados (Waterfall/Hydro Pump)
  • Breloom (Counter/Dynamic Punch)
  • Machamp (Counter/Dynamic Punch)

Hopefully, all of these tips and tricks see Pokemon GO players adding the latest legendary to their personal roster. Heatran may be bulky, but like all other titans, he can fall easily against prepared players. Just be sure to use everything possible to gain the upper hand, and until more develops, Trainers, good luck with the Winter event!

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions for Android and iOS devices.
