Pokemon GO How to Beat Arlo (July 2021)

There’s a lot to look forward to for Pokemon GO players in the month of July. In addition to the plethora of events sprinkled throughout the first two weeks, Pokemon GO Fest 2021 officially kicks off on July 17. A lot of changes are coming to the world of Pokemon GO, though in the case of Team GO Rocket’s line-up, that isn’t the case.

That doesn’t mean Arlo is an easy fight. He’s still a powerful opponent to go against, and for new or unprepared Pokemon GO trainers, it’ll be tough to win. That said, countering the Team GO Rocket member is as straightforward as last month. Arlo is guaranteed to start off with Venonat as his first Pokemon, with the second round between Crobat, Ursaring, or Manectric, and the third round between Vileplume, Magnezone, or Scizor.

Round 1 – Venonat

As before, Arlo’s first Pokemon is the dual Bug and Poison-type Venonat. This Pokemon has a natural weakness to Rock, Fire, Psychic, and Flying-type moves, but resists damage from Bug, Grass, Fairy, Fighting, and Poison-type moves.

A few good counters to take it down quick include:

  • Mewtwo – Confusion & Psychic
  • Rampardos – Zen Headbutt & Tock Slide
  • Moltres – Wing Attack & Sky Attack
  • Entei – Fire Spin & Overheat
  • Honchkrow – Peck & Sky Attack

Round 2 – Crobat, Ursaring, Manectric

This is always when Arlo decides to switch things up. Luckily, in the case of Crobat, trainers already know it’s a dual Flying and Poison-type Pokemon. The best counters are Ice, Psychic, Electric, and Rock-type moves. It resists damage from Fairy, Fighting, Grass, Ground, Poison, and Bug-type moves. Crobat is the best second-round choice to have, as it shares similar counters with Venonat:

  • Weavile – Snarl & Avalanche
  • Rampardos – Zen Headbutt & Tock Slide
  • Mewtwo – Confusion & Psychic
  • Gardevoir – Confusion & Psychic
  • Mamoswine – Powder Snow & Avalanche

Of course, Arlo could throw a curveball at Pokemon GO players by using Ursaring. As a Normal-type Pokemon, Ursaring is weak only to Fighting-type moves but only resists Ghost-type moves. Most Pokemon wouldn’t have an advantage one way or the other, though some good counters to topple the bear Pokemon include:

  • Machamp – Counter & Dynamic Punch
  • Rayquaza – Dragon Tail & Hurricane
  • Pangoro – Low Kick & Close Combat
  • Blaziken  Counter & Brave Bird
  • Thundurus (Therian) – Thunder Shock & Focus Blast

The last of Arlo’s picks could end up being the pure Electric-type Pokemon, Manectric. This pokemon is pretty durable as it’s only vulnerable to Ground-type moves and resists Flying, Steel, and Electric-type moves. Keeping a Ground-type Pokemon or Pokemon with Ground-type moves is the key move here. Some counters include:

  • Landorus (Therian) – Mud Shot & Earthquake
  • Blaziken – Counter & Blast Burn
  • Groudon – Mud Shot & Earthquake
  • Garchomp – Dragon Tail & Earth Power
  • Staraptor – Quick Attack & Return

Round 3 – Vileplume, Magnezone, or Scizor

Arlo’s previous line-up for round 3 is the same this time around, starting off with Vileplume, the Grass and Poison-type Pokemon. Vileplume is weak to Flying, Ice, Psychic, and Fire-type moves, and resists Electric, Fairy, Water, Fighting, and Grass-type moves. As usual, Arlo tends to have a heavy disadvantage against Fire-type Pokemon and Pokemon with Fire-type moves. Some counters include:

  • Chandelure – Fire Spin & Overheat
  • Blaziken – Fire Spin & Overheat
  • Alakazam – Confusion & Psychic
  • Tornadus (Therian) – Gust & Hurricane
  • Glaceon – Frost Breath & Avalanche

Magnezone is another Pokemon Arlo might decide to throw out. A dual Electric and Steel-type Pokemon, Magnezone is weak to Ground, Fighting, and Fire-type moves. Its resistances are an entirely different monster – specifically, it resists Bug, Rock, Fairy, Grass, Normal, Ice, Psychic, Dragon, Electric, Flying, Steel, and Poison-type moves.

For the unprepared, Magnezone is an incredible opponent to have, though keep in mind that Arlo and Fire-types don’t mix well. Additionally, Ground-type moves also perform incredibly well against Magnezone. Some choices to counter it include:

  • Landorus (Therian) – Mud Shot & Earthquake
  • Krookodile – Mud-Slap & Earthquake
  • Groudon – Mud Shot & Earthquake
  • Blaziken – Fire Spin & Overheat
  • Rhydon – Mud-Slap & Earthquake

If Arlo decides to bring Scizor out, Pokemon GO trainers should absolutely prepare for trouble. As a Bug and Steel-type Pokemon, its only weakness is Fire-type moves. Its resistances are as overwhelming as Magnezone, resisting damage from Bug, Steel, Fairy, Grass, Normal, Poison, Dragon, Ice, and Psychic-type moves.

Scizor is unequivocally known for being a tough round 3 pick and can overwhelm a team in seconds. Once again, Fire-type moves are the key to victory, with some good choices including:

  • Reshiram – Fire Fang & Overheat
  • Moltres – Fire Spin & Fire Blast
  • Chandelure – Fire Spin & Overheat
  • Flareon – Fire Spin & Overheat
  • Infernape – Fire Spin & Blast Burn
