Pokemon GO has continuously brought fresh content to keep longtime fans engaged with the game. As part of Pokemon GO’s new Season of Heritage event, Niantic has brought back new challenges and tasks for players to complete to receive rewards.
Of these new December challenges in Pokemon GO, gamers have the option to face off against Giovanni, head of Team Rocket. Giovanni can typically be found after defeating Team Rocket Grunts, defeating the other leaders, and assembling the Super Rocker Radar.
However, this time Giovanni has a whole new team from last month that requires some different strategies. So for Pokemon GO fans looking for good suggestions and knowing what to expect, here is how to defeat Giovanni.
First Pokemon
What comes as no surprise to veteran players, Giovanni always starts his lineup with Persian. Persian is a Normal-type Pokemon, meaning it will be weak to Fighting-type Pokemon.
Some good counters include Tyranitar with Smack Down and Crunch. Terrakion is also a good option with Smack Down and Sacred Sword. Lastly, Lucario with Counter and Aura Sphere will work as a great counter.
Second Pokemon
Unfortunately, there are three different possibilities that Giovanni can use for his second Pokemon that’s chosen at random. These options include Kingler, Nidoking, or Rhyperior.
Kingler is a Water-type Pokemon that is weak to Electric and Grass-type Pokemon. Therefore Torterra with Razor Leaf and Frenzy Plant is a good choice. Magnezone with Spark and Wild Charge is another good option. Lastly, Ludicolo with Razor Leaf and Leaf Storm is also a good option.
Nidoking is a Poison and Ground-type Pokemon, which means it is weak to Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water-type Pokemon. Empoleon with Waterfall and Hydro Cannon is a good choice. Excadrill with Mud Shot and Drill run is another good option. Lastly, Jirachi with Confusion and Doom Desire will also be a great matchup.
Rhyperior is a Ground and Rock-type Pokemon, so it is weak to Grass and Water-type moves. Some good options are Torterra with Razor Leaf and Frenzy Plant. Another good choice is Empoleon with Waterfall and Hydro Cannon. Lastly, Zarude with Vine Whip and Power Whip is another good matchup.
Generally, picking either Water or Grass-type Pokemon like Empoleon and Torterra are safe bets since two of three Giovanni’s second Pokemon are weak to either type.
Third Pokemon
To end the battle, Givanni is going to send in a Shadow Lugia in Pokemon GO. Lugia is a Psychic and Flying-type Pokemon, meaning it is weak to Dark, Electric, Ghost, Ice, and Rock-type moves.
One good option includes Tyranitar with Smack Down and Crunch. Another choice could be Melmetal with Thunder Shock and Rock Slide. Lastly, Bisharp with Snarl and Dark Pulse will also be a great matchup.
Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS devices.
