Pokémon GO How To Beat Giovanni With Suicune

No Team Rocket themed event in any game would be complete without at least an appearance from the big man himself, Giovanni. Therefore, it was no surprise when it was announced the Pokemon GO Team Rocket event would feature a battle against Giovanni with a new Legendary.

Players will remember him as the mysterious Viridian City Gym Leader in the original Pokemon Red and Blue games who was always missing in action until near the end of the game. While he disbanded Team Rocket, it appears he was so charismatic that his henchmen never forgot him, going so far as to take over a Radio Tower in an attempt to contact him. Clearly that charisma followed all the way to 2020, as he’s got a new GO team. Here’s a quick guide on the Pokemon Giovanni uses and what you can bring to counter them.

The first opponent will be his beloved pet feline Persian. As a Normal-type, it’s best to fight it with something like a Hariyama, Machamp, Tyranitar, Rhyperior, or Conkeldurr. Just be careful with any Rock-types you pick, as the rest of his team is mostly Ground-types, also known as a group that has the advantage over Rock Pokemon.

Your next enemy will most likely be a Dugtrio, hence why you want to make sure who battled Persian is someone that can carry over to face off against a Ground-type. Note that Dugtrio isn’t much affected by Rock, Poison, and Electric moves, so make sure that regardless of the type, you have a move that can hit a Ground Pokemon.

I would recommend putting an Ice-type in your party such as Cloyster, Dewgong, or Glaceon because there’s a possibility you may battle a Garchomp, who is a Dragon/Ground-type and Ice Pokemon will have double effectiveness against it. Garchomp isn’t confirmed to always be an opponent, as Dugtrio and Nidoking have also been confirmed by players.

For Nidoking, you’ll want to use a Water-type or the same Ice Pokemon that have an advantage over its ground power. Some ideal water Pokemon would be Starmie, Blastoise, or Politoed.

Suicune, as a Legendary, will be your hardest challenge and as such, you’ll want to bring along your strongest Grass-types to counter its water-type power. Don’t be fooled by its seemingly simple element; if past battles with Legendaries are anything to go by, it’s sure to have a very high amount of HP. Some perfect recommendations to chip away at that bar would be Venusaur, Sceptile, Sunflora, Meganium, or Vileplume.

Giovanni will be your toughest Rocket opponent yet, but with these tips, you’re sure to send him blasting off in no time.
