Niantic is always adapting and updating Pokémon GO in order to keep players interested. Three and a half years in and it’s so far, so good on that front. One of the biggest Pokémon GO introductions of 2019 was the arrival of Shadow Pokémon. As a long-standing element in Pokémon games, Shadow Pokémon are Pokémon that have been captured and brainwashed by Team Rocket — or, in Pokémon GO’s case, Team GO Rocket.

In Pokémon GO, trainers have been tasked with rescuing and purifying Shadow Pokémon. It might have been a while since they were introduced, but the process might still be one that lapsed or newer players are yet to get their heads around. There have also been new Pokémon added to Team GO Rocket’s ranks. We’re here to help out on all of those fronts.

They Just Want To Be Pure

First of all, catching Shadow Pokémon. Stumbling upon a member of Team GO Rocket shouldn’t be too difficult. They’re currently occupying PokéStops, and spinning one will lead to you engaging the grunt who has taken the stop hostage. Occupied PokéStops are also easier to spot and will look different from all the others. Once you find one and spin it, you can then engage in battle with the stop’s Grunt.

At that point, you will be tasked with selecting a team of three Pokémon to take on their brainwashed Shadow Pokémon. If you can defeat them, the Grunt will flee the stop and abandon their Pokémon in the process. Trainers will then have the opportunity to catch them in the same way that they would after defeating a raid boss. Once caught, they will be added to your storage along with your other Pokémon.

At this point, trainers will be able to purify their newly rescued Shadow Pokémon, providing they have enough stardust and candies. Shadow Pokémon will be easy to find in your storage, as their icon will be accompanied by a purple flame in the same place that the stars appear to represent Shiny Pokémon. They will also have an extra option above “Evolve” and “Power-Up,” which says “Purify. “The cost of purifying a Shadow Pokémon will depend on what type of Pokémon it is.

This brings us neatly onto the type of Pokémon that currently have Shadow versions residing in Pokémon GO. Team GO Rocket doesn’t just capture and brainwash any and every Pokémon it comes across.

Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Electabuzz, Magmar, Lapras, Mareep, Seedot, Nuzlead, Sableye, Trapinch, Cacnea, Shuppet, and Duskull have been added since. As have Sandshrew, Wobbuffet, Porygon, Bellsprout, and Magnemite, plus Delibird on Christmas Eve.
