Pokemon GO How to Catch Celebi

After months of waiting, Pokemon GO’s second Special Research quest “A Ripple in Time” is now live in the game, giving players the chance to add the mythical Pokemon Celebi to their collection. Like the quest to catch Mew, the Special Research quest to catch Celebi is broken down into eight steps with multiple objectives that have to be completed if players hope to catch the rare Pokemon.

Here are all the steps and rewards for the Celebi Special Research in Pokemon GO and how to complete each one. Keep in mind that along with the rewards that players earn for completing an entire step, each individual objective will also grant players some bonus XP.

Please note that this article is a work in progress and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Step 1

Pokemon GO How to Catch Celebi

  • Power up Pokemon 5 times
  • Battle in a Gym 2 times
  • Battle in a raid

The first step is fairly straightforward, but it is one that Pokemon GO players will want to get a jump on if they hope to complete multiple steps as fast as possible. Raids are only available certain times of day, so players that fail to battle in a raid today may have to wait until tomorrow to continue the Special Research. The other objectives are self-explanatory, though players should note that they can power up any Pokemon in their roster – it doesn’t have to be the same Pokemon five times.

Completing this step will net players 10 Pokeballs, one Charge TM, and one Super Incubator.

Step 2

  • Make 3 new friends
  • Evolve an evolved grass-type Pokemon
  • Catch a Pokemon three days in a row

And right off the bat, anyone hoping to blaze through the Celebi Special Research in Pokemon GO is going to hit a roadblock with the second step. Making three new friends is actually fairly easy; if there is no one that you know in real life to add, just visit a Pokemon GO forum and it shouldn’t be too hard to find someone to add to the friends list. However, catching a Pokemon three days in a row means that players will have to legitimately wait at least three days to get through this step.

As for evolving an evolved grass-type, that simply means evolving a second stage grass-type Pokemon to its final form. Examples of evolved grass-type Pokemon would be Ivysaur or Bayleef, and since there is a Chikorita Community Day coming up, evolving a Bayleef really shouldn’t be all that difficult.

For completing this step, players will earn 1500 stardust, one Sun Stone, and one Premium Raid Pass.

Step 3

  • Use a Sun Stone to evolve Gloom or Sunkern
  • Reach level 25
  • Hatch 9 eggs

Players can get a Sun Stone from completing the previous step, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to evolve a Gloom or Sunkern. At the time of this writing, Johto region Pokemon are a lot more common in the wild than usual, Sunkern especially, so completing this step should be a lot easier than it would be otherwise.

Rewards for this step include 1 King’s Rock, an Eevee encounter, and 1 Premium Raid Pass.

Step 4

  • Evolve Eevee into Espeon during the day
  • Walk 10 km with Eevee as your buddy to earn Candy
  • Send 20 gifts to friends

The recent Eevee Community Days make this step a little easier, but if players missed out on the event or already transferred and evolved their Eevees, then they may be out of luck.

Most of the time, Pokemon GO players would want to use the name trick to evolve their Eevee into the desired Pokemon, but that’s not necessary here. Espeon and Umbreon have a different evolution method where players can walk with an Eevee for 10km, and then if they evolve that Eevee during the day, it will evolve into Espeon.

Rewards for this step are 1 Metal Coat, an Eevee encounter, and 2500 stardust.

Step 5

  • Walk 10km with Eevee as your buddy to earn Candy
  • Evolve Eevee into Umbreon at night
  • Trade a Pokemon

The naming trick could technically work here again, but we recommend just walking with an Eevee for 10km and then evolving that Eevee when it’s night time. To tell if it’s night in Pokemon GO, just look at the map and if the world is darker, it’s night in the game.

Rewards are 1 Star Piece, 15 Pinap Berries, and 1 Upgrade.

Step 6

Pokemon GO How to Catch Celebi

  • Catch Pokemon 7 days in a row
  • Use 25 Pinap Berries while catching Pokemon
  • Use items to evolve Pokemon 2 times

This step seems designed to keep players from completing the Special Research too fast, as it requires them to catch Pokemon for a week straight before they can move on to the next step. While this may end up being one of the lengthier steps of the Special Research, it will at least be easy to complete. Players can use the evolution items earned in the previous steps to evolve Pokemon in their roster to complete the final objective.

Rewards are 5 Silver Pinap Berries, 1 Dragon Scale, and 3500 stardust.

Step 7

Pokemon GO How to Catch Celebi

  • Catch 40 Grass- or Psychic-type Pokemon
  • Make an Excellent Curve Throw
  • Earn a gold Johto medal

Catching 40 Grass- or Psychic-type Pokemon will be quite the feat, but there are some fairly common grass-type Pokemon lying around. Plus, if players are able to reach this objective by the time Chikorita Community Day comes around, it should be a lot easier.

Rewards are 10 Silver Pinap Berries, 1 Charge TM, and the Celebi encounter.

Step 8

Pokemon GO How to Catch Celebi

The final step of the Celebi Special Research is, unsurprisingly, catching Celebi. Celebi is a bit trickier than Mew, and tends to stay far away from the trainer. However, players should have unlimited attempts to catch Celebi, though they may run out of Pokeballs during the process.

Rewards include 20 Celebi candy, 1 Super Incubator, and 5500 stardust.

After completing all eight steps, Pokemon GO players will have captured Celebi and may be wondering what the next Special Research has in store. There are many mythical Pokemon that have yet to be added to the game, and while Niantic may break its pattern and use Special Research for non-mythical Pokemon, the safe bet is players will have an opportunity to catch Deoxys or Jirachi next.

Pokemon GO is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
