Pokemon GO How to Catch Mew

Pokemon GO’s Field and Special Research quests are now available, meaning that trainers finally have the opportunity to catch the mythical Pokemon Mew in the game. However, catching Mew is easier said than done, and is going to require a significant time investment for most Pokemon GO players.

Catching the Mythical Pokemon Mew in Pokemon GO is the goal of the Special Research quest called A Mythical Discovery. This quest is divided into eight distinct steps, all of which have their own set of objectives and rewards. While some may not want spoilers for what lies ahead, others may want to be sure that they can properly prepare for some of the crazier objectives.

Here are all the objectives players have to complete to catch Mew in Pokemon GO.

Step 1

Pokemon GO How to Catch Mew

  • Spin 5 PokeStops
  • Catch 10 Pokemon
  • Transfer 5 Pokemon

As expected, the first step is the easiest. These are just basic actions players do when playing Pokemon GO, and so the first step should be completed in no time at all. Upon completion, players will earn 500 XP per objective completed, 10 Great Balls, one Incubator, and three Lure Modules.

Step 2

Pokemon GO How to Catch Mew

  • Earn 2 Candies walking with your buddy
  • Make 10 Great Throws
  • Hatch 3 Eggs

Step 2 is somewhat trickier than Step 1, but is still fairly easy. Hatching eggs is just a matter of walking a certain distance, and with the current Eggstravaganza event going on where 2km eggs are the standard, that particular objective should be even easier to complete. Getting Great Throws is simple as well – just wait for the circle around the Pokemon to be about half its size, and then throw a ball so that it lands in the circle.

As for earning candies by walking with your buddy Pokemon, that objective can be as hard or as easy as players want it to be. Players can stick with whatever buddy Pokemon they currently have with them regardless of walking distance required, or they can select a Pokemon that only needs 1km walking distance per candy, like Zubat.

Players will earn 1,000 XP per objective in step 2, along with 2,000 stardust, three Incense, and 20 Great Balls.

Step 3

Pokemon GO How to Catch Mew

  • Reach Level 15
  • Battle in a Gym 2 Times
  • Battle in 2 raids

Step 3 is when things will get a little harder for those that live in rural areas, where gyms may be a bit more spread out and raids may not show up quite as much. Even so, this step is still easy enough, as most hardcore Pokemon GO players will likely be well past level 15 at this point, and the objective for battling in a gym two times can be done in the same gym, as all it requires is players engage in battle against two different Pokemon.

The rewards for step 3 are 1,500 XP per objective, one Charge TM, one Quick TM, and two Star Pieces.

Step 4

  • Earn a silver Kanto medal
  • Evolve 20 Pokemon
  • Earn 5 candies walking with your buddy

Earning a silver Kanto medal in Pokemon GO is not that difficult of a task, especially for those who have been consistently playing the game since its launch in the summer of 2016. To get one, all players need to do is register 50 different Kanto region Pokemon in their Pokedex. On their way to get this, players should easily knock out the objective for evolving 20 Pokemon, and the Zubat walking trick will still work for earning five candies.

Players will earn 2,000 XP per objective in step 4, along with 4,000 stardust, three lure modules, and 20 Great Balls.

Step 5

  • Catch Ditto
  • Make 20 Great Throws
  • Catch 10 Ghost Pokemon

Now here is where most players will run into a roadblock. Catching Ditto is a rare thing in and of itself, so players may be stuck on this objective for awhile. To catch Ditto, players need to catch a Pokemon that it’s hiding as, with these Pokemon being possibilities for Ditto-in-disguise as of the latest update: Gastly, Gulpin, Hoothoot, Pidgey, Rattata, Sentret, Taillow, Whismur, Yanma, Zigzagoon, and Zubat.

Catching 10 ghost-type Pokemon will also prove challenging for many Pokemon GO players. Ghost-type Pokemon are very common during the Halloween event every October, but are much more difficult to find in the wild any other time of the year. And unfortunately, we can confirm that hatching ghost-type Pokemon out of eggs doesn’t count as “catching” them.

There is one way to make the process of catching ghost-type Pokemon a little easier, and that’s by completing certain Field Research objectives. For example, the Field Research objective to Make 3 Great Throws will make Gastly spawn, and there may be other objectives tied to other ghost-type Pokemon as well.

Players will earn 2,500 XP per objective in step 5, in addition to one premium raid pass, one Lucky Egg, and 15 Revives.

Step 6

Pokemon GO How to Catch Mew

  • Reach Level 25
  • Battle 10 Raids
  • Evolve a Magikarp

Battling 10 Raids will take at least 10 days if players only use the free raid passes they get daily. Otherwise, players may want to consider spending some cash or in-game coins to buy additional raid passes out of event boxes or directly from the store. Any raids will do, and it doesn’t appear as though players actually have to complete the raids – just battle in them.

In the meantime, evolving a Magikarp is going to be a time-consuming process, as it takes 400 Magikarp candy to evolve it into a Gyarados. However, players can speed up the process by playing by a body of water like a lake, hatching Magikarp out of eggs, using rare candy on Magikarp, and having Magikarp assigned as their buddy Pokemon.

By completing this step, players will earn 3,000 XP per objective, plus 6,000 stardust, five rare candies, and three incense.

Step 7

Pokemon GO How to Catch Mew

  • Catch 50 Pokemon using a berry
  • Make 1 Excellent Curve Throw
  • Earn a Gold Kanto medal

Excellent curve throws in Pokemon GO are achieved by throwing a curveball, and then having it land in the very small circle that is closing in on the Pokemon. This will take some practice, but players should be able to get it eventually. Meanwhile, getting a gold Kanto medal will require players to register 100 Kanto region Pokemon in the Pokedex, which shouldn’t be an issue for most players.

As for the first objective of catching Pokemon using a berry, that’s rather straightforward. Assuming players have enough berries and Pokeballs, they should be able to do this on low level Pokemon without much difficulty. Players can feed Pokemon Razz Berries, which make them easier to catch; Nanab Berries, which make Pokemon less erratic; Pinap Berries, which give players more candy when a Pokemon is caught; and finally, Golden Razz Berries, which make Pokemon much easier to catch.

Players will know when a berry is active on a Pokemon because a picture of that berry will be on the Pokemon’s CP and name bar above their head. Once a Pokemon has been fed with a berry (any of them will do), simply throw a Pokeball and catch it.

Players will earn 3,500 XP per objective in step 7, along with 8,000 stardust, 20 Ultra Balls, and a chance to catch Mew.

Step 8

Pokemon GO How to Catch Mew

  • Catch Mew

After players have completed all seven steps, the only thing left is actually catching Mew. It seems as though Mew has a 100% catch rate, so players don’t have to stress too much about it. There are also shiny Mews out there, so trainers should keep that in mind as well.

Catching Mew will get players 4,000 XP, 10,000 stardust, one Super Incubator, and 20 Mew Candy that they can use to make the mythical creature a bit more powerful.

Overall, the first Special Research quest for Pokemon GO is quite extensive, and it may take some players weeks to complete it. While some may find the objectives overwhelming, there’s no denying that they add depth to the experience, and should make Pokemon GO a more engaging game overall.

Pokemon GO is available now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
