Pokemon GO How to Counter and Beat Cresselia in Raids

Yesterday, the legendary Ghost- and Dragon-type legendary Giratina left Pokemon GO’s legendary raid roster and was replaced by the lunar, Psychic-type legendary Cresselia. Trainers looking to add this legendary to their collection should hurry and take down the Tier 5 raid boss, as it will be rotating out on December 18 at 1:00 PM PST.

To that effect, we’ve compiled this guide to help players, experienced or otherwise, go into battle prepared for this legendary. So, without further ado, here’s everything players need to know to take down Pokemon GO’s latest legendary raid boss.

Cresselia’s raid boss CP maxes out at 30849 CP and reduces to as low as 1555 when catching the legendary. Its standard CP will go as low as 1555 to 1633, though a weather-boosted Cresselia will have between 1944-2041 CP. 3-5 high level players could take down the legendary with proper counters, but 6+ is better to assure victory.

Cresselia’s Move Set

  • Psycho Cut (fast, Psychic-type move)
  • Confusion (fast, Psychic-type move)
  • Futuresight (charged, Psychic-type move)
  • Moonblast (charged, Fairy-type move)
  • Aurora Beam (charged, Ice-type move)

The moves on the above list to watch are Futuresight and Moonblast, specifically which Pokemon they are used against. Futuresight will completely destroy a Gengar, but be handled well by a Tyranitar. Moonblast will do more damage to a Tyranitar, yet it’s not as destructive as Futuresight against Gengar. Aurora Beam is the legendary’s weakest move and the easiest to face for trainers.

Weather Boost

Cresselia is boosted by Windy weather, which boosts both of its fast moves and Futuresight. Those wanting to catch a stronger Cresselia should try to face it in this weather, but be wary of its move set. Cloudy and Snowy weather will boost its Moonblast and Aurora Beam moves, respectively. The ideal weather to face Cresselia in is Rainy, which boosts Bug counters, and Fog, which boosts Dark and Ghost counters.

Best Counters

Here are the move types that Cresselia is weak against: Ghost, Dark, and Bug. As a result, here are the best counters (with their best move set):

  • Mewtwo (Confusion/Shadow Ball)
  • Tyranitar (Bite/Crunch)
  • Gengar (Shadow Claw/Shadow Ball)
  • Scizor (Fury Cutter/X Scissor)
  • Houndoom (Snarl/Foul Play)
  • Honchkrow (Snarl/Dark Pulse)

As seen in the list above, Mewtwo is the absolute best counter against Cresselia. However, for those unable to add that legendary to their collection, Tyranitar and Gengar serve as the best options to go with. Scizor, Houndoom, and Honchkrow are all solid options, though players will need to use a Sinnoh Stone on a Murkrow to get that final Pokemon.

Hopefully, by using this guide, players can take down the latest Raid Boss to come to Pokemon GO. Of course, it will take some considerable luck to actually catch the Poke mon, but that’s the nature of the game. Until more develops, good luck taking down Cresselia, Trainers!
