Inkay has a unique evolutionary method available in Pokemon Go. Inkay evolves into Malamar, both of which originate from the sixth generation titles, Pokemon X and Y. Pokemon Go recently sent everyone a curveball with the release of Pokemon from the Galar region, skipping right over Alola, the next region to be available in chronological order. With this, Pokemon Go is now releasing Pokemon from both Kalos and Galar around the same time. The most recent addition to coming to Pokemon Go is Inkay and Malamar, the squid-themed Pokemon.
Inkay and Malamar will be added to Pokemon Go alongside its Psychic Spectacular event. This event will take place from Wednesday, September 8th at 10 am to Monday, September 13th at 8 pm local time. During this period, the game will focus on spawning more Psychic-type Pokemon, including Abra, Drowzee, Gothita, Solosis, and more. There will also be special Field Research tasks centered around capturing Psychic-type Pokemon. Inkay and Malamar will be the only two new additions to the game during this time but they do come along with a special evolution method.
Normally, players would need either a sufficient number of Candies or a special evolutionary item (Unova Stone, Sinnoh Stone, Upgrade, etc) in order to evolve a Pokemon. Inkay is taking a page right out of the Pokemon X and Y book with its evolution method. Here’s how players can do it.
How To Evolve Inkay To Malamar in Pokemon Go
Pokemon GO players will still need to collect 50 Inkay Candy in order to evolve into Malamar. This can be done by capturing more Inkay using Pinap Berries, or setting Inkay as the player’s buddy and walking around to earn more Candy. Once the player has collected 50 Candy, they can head to Inkay in their Pokemon collection and then physically turn their phone upside down. This will unlock the ability to evolve Inkey into Malamar.
Back in the Nintendo 3DS, players needed to flip over their handhelds in order to evolve it. These devices can clearly tell when they aren’t right side up, so much so, that developers made it into a mechanic for one of its most interesting evolution methods. Inkay and Malamar have been fan-favorites of the Kalos region because of this. Currently, this is the only Pokemon in existence that uses this method to evolve. With the Psychic Spectular event taking place, this is the best chance to collect a sufficient amount of Candy to evolve. Grab 50 candy, flip the phone, and collect Pokemon Go’s Malamar.
