Pokémon GO trainers have been coming across an annoying white screen at times. Here’s how to fix it without needing to restart the app.

Pokémon GO celebrated its fourth birthday last month and for the most part, it has been success after success for Niantic’s very popular AR game. The app has been downloaded more than a billion times, and it continues to generate billions of dollars each year. However, like any free to play live service game, Pokémon GO has encountered its fair share of problems.

Players of games like Pokémon GO can only hope that Niantic finds and thwarts these problems as quickly as possible, which is often the case. However, there’s one problem plaguing trainers at the moment that doesn’t seem to be going away. Perhaps because most trainers don’t even realize it’s a common/shared issue.

The very annoying blank white screen. It seems to happen when a trainer taps a Pokémon that is about to despawn. It appears that the only way to remedy the problem is to restart the app, but that isn’t actually true. Players have discovered that the game is still running, it just isn’t visible. u/whoneedsselfesteem might not have been the first to discover this, but seems to have been the first of many to share an easy fix.

When it happens, continue to tap randomly on the screen. Since Pokémon GO hasn’t crashed, if a trainer happens to tap a PokéStop, a gym, or another Pokémon, the app will refresh and the white screen will disappear. It will instead be replaced by whatever happens after the landmark or Pokémon that has been tapped. Annoying, but a far better solution than restarting the app.

There’s a very real chance, of course, that there is nothing to tap. Unfortunately, players have no way of knowing whether that’s the case, and it is a frustrating game of chance. It’s up to the individual players how long they want to spend blindly tapping, hoping they’ll hit something sooner or later. If it takes too long, then restarting the app might not seem like such a waste of time after all in some cases.
