When it comes to Pokemon, Shiny Pokemon are often sought out in the wild by players. They don’t offer higher stats or have a special move from their regular counterparts, and their only difference is their outward appearance. However, their 1 in 500 chance of them appearing in Pokemon GO makes them exceptionally special to some players.

Despite how common they were near Violet City of the Johto region, a Shiny Wooper is not exempted from the low Shiny Appearance rate. Until last year, Wooper was Shiny Locked in Pokemon GO.

Why Shiny Hunt for Wooper?

Wooper may be a Pokemon many players will gladly skip over. It has low attack, weak defense, and even worse speed. However, once it’s evolved into Quagsire, players can make the most out of its unique typing competitively by giving it a solid moveset.

Both Wooper and Quagsire are dual-Type Water/Ground. This means it is immune to Electric-Type, unlike single Water-Type Pokemon. One of Wooper’s abilities, Damp, prevents the use of self-destruction move. Its second ability Water Absorb will turn any Water-Type move it get hits by into HP. If players are lucky enough to have Wooper with its Hidden Ability, Unaware, then their Wooper (or Quagsire) can dish out damage and ignore the stat changes their opponent may have (ex: increased defense).

On the downside, Wooper and its evolved form are extremely weak to Grass Types because of its Water/Ground-Typing. Unless its defense is raised in battle or Wooper’s level outclasses the opponent, one Grass-Type Move is enough to 1HKO it.

Finding Shiny Wooper

Shiny Wooper first appeared during Pokemon GO’s 2020 Game Awards Event and was much easier to find thanks to its increased spawn rate.

Now the best spots to find Wooper are in wet locations such as a beach, canal, or wetland. They can also be found at parks too. In addition, players are more likely to see Water-Types such as Wooper while it’s raining.

Catching Shiny Wooper

Shiny Hunting in Pokemon GO is a little trickier thanks to the absence of the Shiny Charm or Masuda Method. This leaves players to rely on Rates for a higher chance of finding a Shiny Pokemon. For example, Community Day is an event that lasts once a month for a few hours. While the chances of catching a Shiny during this period are 1 in 25, the Shiny Pokemon with this rate is only the Featured Pokemon.

When looking for Shiny Wooper, players should look for cluster spawns instead of manually checking each one. Since Pokemon will not appear Shiny on the field map, players can use Pokemon GO’s AR Mode to make their hunt easier. This mode will bring up the UI all at once instead of taking the player into the traditional encounter mode. Start by unchecking the “Niantic AR” in the Settings Screen under AR.

Wooper has a Capture Rate of 40% and a Flee Rate of 10%. Golden Razz Berries will increase the capture rate of a wild Pokemon, but these can only be obtained through Raid Boss Battles. If players wish, they can use Nabnab Berries on Shiny Wooper since these stop a Pokemon from moving around too much.

Players that worry the Shiny Wooper may flee should use Poke Balls with higher catch rates such as a Great Ball.
