Pokémon GO How To Participate In A Drive To Investigate Special Research Event (And Everything You Need To Know)

The world is in a strange place right now as the COVID-19 virus continues to spread. For games like Pokémon GO, which focuses on trying to get its players outside, the gameplay will have to change entirely. Already we’ve seen the walking requirements to battle competitively disappear so that players will stay inside and binge battle. Nevertheless, for the time being at least, a special research event titled “A Drive To Investigate” is still scheduled to happen this weekend.

A Drive To Investigate will start at 8 a.m. local time on March 20, 2020, and run until 10 p.m. local time on March 26, 2020. Although elements of the event will be available to all players, most of its big perks will only be in-game for trainers who purchase a ticket. Tickets for the event will cost $7.99 each, or the equivalent in local currency, and cannot be purchased using Pokécoins.

Genesect Has Joined The Battle

The centerpiece of the research event will be the arrival of Genesect in Pokémon GO. Ticket holders will be among the first trainers to encounter the Gen V Pokémon which can change its attack type depending on the drive it is holding at any given time. Professor Willow will reference a trail of damage he wants trainers to follow, and will comment on it being curious as it has been caused by various types of Pokémon.

Genesect’s nature as a Bug-type that can use various types will also lead ticket-holding trainers to encounters with other Pokémon of varying types for completing special research objectives. Those Pokémon will include Pinsir, Scizor, Skarmory, Karrablast, and Shelmet. Pokémon GO’s site also hints at other Pokémon linked to Gensect popping up for completing research during the event. Encounters with Durant might also happen, a Pokémon previously locked to the Eastern hemisphere.

A ticket to the event will also include a Genesect-themed bag and cap for trainers. Plus, five premium battles passes, three super incubators, three charged TMs, three fast TMs, three incense, three star pieces, one poffin, fifteen rare candies, and a glacial lure. Quite the haul to go along with an increased chance of encountering Scizor, Skarmory, Nincada, and Shieldon in the wild.

Tickets, Please!

Tickets will be available for purchase a few days before the event goes live on March 20. To do so, players need to click “Learn More” and then tap the Buy button. Players should then receive a notification and the ticket will be in their Item Bag. Players will receive their medal before the event, and the Special Research will appear once the event officially begins. Best of all, the research does not need to be completed before the end of the event. Also, Niantic has revealed Genesect will be coming to EX Raids for everyone else next month.

As for how this event might be affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there’s a note from Niantic in the event announcement about certain areas possibly being affected. The developer has already tweaked its new Battle League entry requirements so that players don’t have to walk 3 km in order to qualify for the time being. Chances are other elements of the game will be altered temporarily as calls to quarantine increase.
