Since the recent introduction of gen 4 Pokemon to Pokemon GO, many may have been on the edge of their seats waiting for one of the most popular gen 4 legendaries, the Dark-type Darkrai. Now, with Cresselia added to the game as a Tier 5 raid boss, it suggests that Darkrai could very well be up next.
For the uninitiated, Cresselia and Darkrai form a legendary duo known as the Lunar Duo, as Cresselia is based on the crescent moon and Darkrai on the new moon. Because of this relationship, it seems likely that Darkrai will take over for Cresselia as the next Pokemon GO raid boss when its time for the legendary to rotate out in December.
This seems likely because typically duos and trios follow closely in the raid roster, with examples such as the legendary Titan trio (Regirock, Regice, and Registeel), the Tower duo (Lugia, Ho-Oh), and the weather trio (Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza). Furthermore, the duo parallels each other frequently in the main series, meaning that their relationship is close, if not closer, than some other legendaries.
These parallels can be seen throughout Gen 4 Pokemon lore, as Darkrai is caught in the main series on Newmoon island and Cresselia on Fullmoon island. Cresselia is also known to give people pleasant dreams, whereas Darkrai gives people nightmares. All of these correlations set Darkrai up to follow Cresselia as a raid boss perfectly.
Of course, this is only speculation, and the only one in the know is Niantic. Although we’d prefer to learn sooner rather than later, players can expect a reveal on December 18, which is the date Cresselia is set to leave raid battles. Hopefully, it’ll be Darkrai, which makes perfect sense, but it remains to be seen. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
