Niantic can’t seem to catch a break with its servers, as it is having to hold another Pokémon GO makeup event this weekend after suffering from technical difficulties during Dragon Week. Dragon Week was a special event unlocked during Pokémon GO Fest 2020 after players completed a certain number of challenges.
This is not the first time Pokémon GO has had server issues during a big event. Just recently, during Pokémon GO Fest 2020, players experience similar connection issues. Niantic was quick to announce that Pokémon GO would hold a makeup day for players who have purchased a ticket for the online-only GO Fest. The rest of the event ran smoothly, and the makeup day was held a few weeks after GO Fest concluded, giving attendees another chance to experience the event without being held back by server trouble.
It turns out that it wasn’t just Pokémon GO Fest that had server issues, as the Dragon Week unlock was marred by similar problems. The official Pokémon GO Twitter account announced that a makeup period would take place starting this weekend so everyone would have a chance to access the bonus event. The makeup period will start on Friday, August 21st at 8 am and will run until Wednesday, August 26th at 10 pm local time. During the event, trainers will have access to new Timed Research missions, which will offer the same rewards as the Research Tasks from Dragon Week. Pokémon GO developer Niantic stated in a blog post that the other features of Dragon Week, like Dragon Pokémon spawning more frequently, would not be active during the makeup event.

We are aware that a few Trainers are unable to recover the Timed Research even after reinstalling the app. Please stay tuned for details on a make-up Timed Research to be released at a later date (TBD). We apologize for the inconvenience.
While the Pokémon GO team did not clarify which technical issues were the cause of the makeup event, it did pinpoint Time Research as the area having problems. Niantic Support’s Twitter account posted during the Dragon Week event that it was working on a fix for trainers whose Timed Research challenges were disappearing. After a patch was pushed out that failed to stop the issue, Niantic Support stated that details would be released regarding a makeup event.
It is great that Niantic is taking initiative and hosting makeup events when its servers do not work as intended, but this has been an issue for Pokémon GO since the game’s release. It has been over four years since Pokémon GO was released in a severely unfinished state, and although the game has evolved tremendously over the years, it still presents the same issues time and time again. Thank you, Niantic, for hosting these makeup events when your servers fail, but please fix Pokemon GO before hosting any more major events.
