Pokémon GO Keeps Packing Updates for December

Niantic introduced major changes with its Pokémon GO December update, but as the month continues, there’s still more content for players to explore. Kalos region Pokémon are already available, the level cap has increased and the game now operates on a seasonal rotation, which changes things up significantly. However, December also features other, smaller updates.

Until Jan. 1, 2021 at 1 p.m. PT, Lapras or Unovan Darumaka will feature in the Research Breakthrough encounter. Legendary Pokémon Kyurem will appear in five-star raids all month, while Mega Abomasnow will appear in Mega Raids all month. Raid Hour events will continue to take place on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. local time, without the usual weekly changeover from past months.

Pokémon Spotlight Hour will also continue each Tuesday at 6 p.m. local time. December’s spotlights have an ice theme: Snorunt and Snover will be spotlighted on Dec. 22 and Dec. 29, with double Candy for transferring Pokémon and double XP for evolving Pokémon, respectively. The Dec. 15 spotlight is a surprise, but will earn players double Candy for catching Pokémon.

To help trainers level up in December, the double Catch XP bonus will be in effect until Dec. 31 at 11:59 p.m. local time. Simultaneously, the chance of encountering a Smeargle after taking a snapshot has increased and Trainers can earn more Candy for catching a Pokémon that has been given a Silver Pinap Berry. Nanab Berries are also more effective, fully calming Pokémon down in encounters.

Other December updates in Pokémon GO affect research, buddies and stardust. Completing the “Make 3 Excellent Throws in a Row” task will lead to an encounter with Gible, instead of Larvitar. Battling with buddies can earn players up to three hearts each day and buddies will get more easily excited. Plus, Golden Razz Berries and Silver Pinap Berries are more effective when given to buddies. If players give a Pokémon a Berry at a Gym, they’ll earn 30 Stardust (an increase from 20); more Stardust can also be earned from weekly Adventure Sync rewards.

Finally, Niantic has introduced a more comprehensive search system for Pokémon GO. Pokémon tagging will allow players to create different colored tags, apply them to Pokémon and use them to filter Pokémon in their collections. The Pokémon search bar will generate a new screen with recommended search terms, such as Pokémon Type, Region, Buddy Level, Shiny and more.
