Pokémon GO Larvitar Replaces Trapinch As Julys Research Breakthrough Reward

A new month means a new Research Breakthrough Reward in Pokémon GO. As of 1 pm on July 1, Trapinch is out and Larvitar is in.

Completing research in order to earn a Research Breakthrough Reward is the easiest, albeit frustratingly time-consuming way to earn encounters with Pokémon in Pokémon GO. Every time a trainer collects seven stamps, they will earn a Research Breakthrough Reward in the form of a Pokémon encounter.

The good news is ever since Niantic changed Pokémon GO to make it more play-from-home and social distancing friendly, the tasks have become very easy to complete. They usually require nothing more than to catch Pokémon or use berries. The bad news is players can only earn one stamp per day, so it takes at least a week to unlock a Research Breakthrough Reward.

The reward for doing so throughout June was Trapinch, a revelation that annoyed quite a few hardened Pokémon players. Trainers focused on building a team capable of battle aren’t too interested in Trapinch and its evolved forms. The Pokémon replacing Trapinch as July’s Research Breakthrough Reward will be music to the ears of those same trainers. Larvitar will be the reward starting from 1 pm on July 1, and that includes the chance to stumble upon a shiny variant of the sought after Pokémon.

Larvitar are hard to come by in Pokémon GO, so the guarantee of a Larvitar encounter every seven days, for those who keep on top of their stamps, is very good news. Its fully-evolved form Tyranitar is a battle-hardened favorite for a number of reasons. Trainers will need 100 Larvitar candy in order to get a Tyranitar. A tall order, but you have to start somewhere.

Larvitar’s arrival as a Research Breakthrough Reward will also give any trainers without a Tyranitar one last chance to get one before GO Fest 2020. There will be a lot of battling going on that weekend, whether it be against other trainers or in raids, so a Tyranitar will be a must in any and every trainer’s battle line-up. Anyone with a seventh stamp at their disposal today will want to wait until 1 pm PDT tp use it, otherwise, it will lead to a Trapinch encounter. After that, Larvitar is in charge.
