After launching on mobile devices back in 2016, Pokemon GO has been a massive success for Niantic and The Pokemon Company. However, many fans wondered how the game would be impacted by the COVID-19 global pandemic, which forced people to stay home and be socially distant from one another, two concepts that work against the main ideas of the game. Unlike some games like Minecraft Earth, which recently shut down, Niantic managed to pull record earnings in 2020 thanks to some smart pivots.

Instead of refusing to change with the current situation impacting the globe, Niantic made a number of important changes to help players continue finding Pokemon while still being safe. Changes made to the game ranged from more subtle like incense lasting to an hour, to more extreme such as reduction of Pokemon Egg hatch distance, daily items, gift upgrades, and plenty more. While some settings have reverted back to how they were pre-pandemic, Niantic is always updating and adding new content to the game.

Through 2020 and even in 2021, Niantic has managed to increase the Pokedex with new creatures to find. While there are still plenty of the pocket monsters yet to be included, a new leak indicates that even more Gen 6 Pokemon are on the way. The additions appear to be coming in waves, as Pokemon GO has already seen a handful added over the past through months like Fennekin, Chespin, and Froakie during special events.

The latest leak, which was shared on the Silph Road subReddit, shows datamined information and sprites for yet to be revealed Gen 6 Pokemon like Skiddo, Gogoat, Pancham, Pangoro, Honedge, Doublade, Inkay, Malamar, Binacle, Barbaracle, Helioptile, Heliolisk, Amaura, Aurorus, and Dedenne. In addition, dataminers came across a few additional Fairy-type monsters like Spritzee, Aromatisse, Swirlix, Slurpuff, and the final version of Eevee, Sylveon. With such a large focus on fairies, many have begun to assume that Pokemon GO is getting a Fairy event sometime in 2021.

The other piece to this datamine seems to correlate with the confirmation that Niantic gave regarding the X & Y Legendary Xerneas being added soon. In addition to Xerneas, dataminers came across new legendary Pokemon like Zygarde and Ylveltal, both of which also have shiny versions as well.

While there’s still no date or release window information fans can work off of, Niantic continues to update the game. In addition to the Spring into Spring and Season of Legends events, Niantic recently announced a big change coming to the Pokemon Egg system. The quality-of-life change lets players see which Pokemon could hatch from eggs within their inventory. Simply tapping an egg shows the possibilities, giving players greater control over which egg they ultimately decide to use in an Incubator.

Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
