Pokemon GO Legendary Week Kicks Off

This week should be an exciting one for Pokemon GO fans. Not only do they have the Dratini Community Day to look forward to, but they will also have additional chances to catch legendary Pokemon like Kyogre and Groudon as part of the game’s Legendary Week, running from February 23 to March 5.

Kyogre and Groudon will be joining Rayquaza in legendary raids in Pokemon GO this week, and there are some special stipulations to keep in mind. If players manage to defeat Rayquaza more times than they defeat Kyogre and Groudon combined, then Pokemon that prefer windy weather are more likely to hatch from eggs from March 5 to March 16. If not, players can expect Pokemon that prefer sunny or rainy weather to hatch more frequently from eggs in the same timeframe.

Since players are being encouraged to participate in as many raid battles as possible, they will need to have more raid passes than usual. Realizing this, Niantic has also announced new special boxes that will debut on February 24, containing additional raid passes to make sure players stay in the action. Pricing information on these boxes aren’t available at this time, but they will likely be similar to the boxes offered during previous events. It’s also unclear what other goodies the boxes will contain, like super incubators, for instance.

Overall, Legendary Week sounds like Niantic’s way of trying to convince more players to participate in legendary raids. This effort has extended to EX Raids as well, with Niantic sending out more EX Raid Passes recently in response to fan complaints.

This could also be an attempt to bring back lapsed Pokemon GO players, but it’s worth pointing out that legendary raids may be virtually impossible for Pokemon trainers that stopped playing the game awhile back. Legendary raid Pokemon are no joke, and usually require multiple Pokemon trainers and powerful Pokemon, like Golem and Tyranitar.

Whether or not Legendary Week convinces lapsed Pokemon GO players to return to the game or dedicated fans to participate in more legendary raids remains to be seen. Regardless, Legendary Week is kicking off as of today and will run until March 5, so anyone interested should be sure to participate.

Pokemon GO is available now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
