Pokémon GO Mega Evolution Explained

Niantic just released a major update for Pokémon GO, including a mega change: Mega Evolution. This affects how Pokémon evolve, as well as how Raids will work moving forward.

The introduction of Mega Evolution to Pokémon GO is interesting, because of how different the mobile game is when compared to console titles. In Pokémon GO, players need to collect Mega Energy by battling in Mega Raids, which feature Mega-Evolved Pokémon (hence the name).

The amount of Mega Energy players receive from Mega Raids depends on the speed at which players defeat it. After players defeat a Mega Raid, others are not able to catch the Mega-Evolved form of the Pokémon, as it will revert to its normal form.

Pokémon GO Mega Evolution Explained

Once a player Mega Evolves their Pokémon, the amount of Mega Energy required to evolve it again will decrease. Shadow and Clone Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve and currently this form is limited to Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise and Beedrill. There will most likely be an update in the future that will allow other Pokémon to Mega Evolve. Players can access a new section of the Pokédex to view all the Mega Evolutions.

Once Pokémon are Mega-Evolved, they will stay that way for a limited time, which will allow players to do a variety of things. One of the main reasons to Mega Evolve Pokémon is for battling, Raids, Gyms, Team Go Rocket and friends. When using a Mega-Evolved Pokémon in a Raid, all Pokémon will receive an attack boost. However, that’s not all. Attacking Pokémon of the same type as the Mega-Evolved Pokémon will get an additional attack boost.

Mega-Evolved Pokémon will not be able to defend Gyms. In addition to battling, players can make these their buddy Pokémon to see them on the map and interact normally, which includes taking photos.

To help promote Mega Evolution, there are a few in-game items, including a Mega Bracelet avatar item, Special Research focused around Mega Evolution and three weeks of Mega Evolution events taking place in September. Unlike in console games, where Mega Evolution requires the Bracelet, it’s pure accessory in Pokémon GO.

Meanwhile, the Special Research features just four tasks: Catch 10 Pokémon, win a Raid, win a Mega Raid and defeat three Team Go Rocket grunts. Mega Evolution events in September are as follows:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 7: Complete 2 million Mega Raids to unlock Mega Pidgeot — This event will include an increased number of Mega Raids, increased attack bonuses from friends in Raids and limited-time, event-exclusive Field Research focused on raid-related tasks, which will grant Mega Energy for Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise upon completion. Additionally, these Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild: Abra, Magnemite, Exeggcute, Rhyhorn, Tangela, Electabuzz, Omanyte, Aerodactyl, Murkrow, Treecko, Torchic, Lotad and Roselia, with a possibility for finding a Shiny Lotad.
  • Friday, Sept. 11 to Thursday, Sept. 17: Complete 275 million battles to unlock Mega Houndoom — This event will feature event-exclusive Field Research tasks that will grant Beedrill Mega Energy upon completion, as well as a temporary CP boost when players use Mega Beedrill in Gym battles, Team GO Rocket battles and Trainer battles (excluding GO Battle League) during the event. Completing these tasks will also grant Mega Energy for Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise. These bug-type Pokémon will appear more frequently: Caterpie, Weedle, Paras, Venonat, Scyther, Pinsir, Ledyba, Spinarak, Wurmple, Kricketot and Burmy, with a possibility for finding a Shiny Ledyba. Additionally, Team GO Rocket will use different Shadow Pokémon throughout this event, so players should Mega Evolve Beedrill before taking them on. There will also be Raid and battle-focused Timed Research throughout the week.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 22 to Monday, Sept. 28: Complete the Mega Evolution-themed Timed Research story to unlock an extra Halloween treat — During this event, Mega-Evolved Pokémon will stay in these forms for three times longer (12 hours, versus four hours) and Poffin duration will double. Large Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild, including Doduo, Alolan Exeggutor, Pinsir, Lapras, Snorlax, Furret, Wobbuffet, Mantine and Skarmory, with a possibility for finding a Shiny Doduo. Completing Field Research will increase the Beedrill Mega Energy rewarded and players can receive Mega Energy for Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise by completing tasks. Players who complete the Timed Research can unlock an additional Timed Research during the Halloween Event, which marksMega Gengar’s debut in Pokémon GO.

Mega Evolution looks different in Pokémon GO than in console games, but it’s still worth pursuing.
