Mega Evolutions have finally arrived with the latest Pokémon GO update. Mega evolutions were originally introduced with the 6th generation of Pokémon games and allowed certain monsters to temporarily change their type, ability and stats using items known as “Mega Stones.” In the main series, pocket monsters can only Mega Evolve once per battle – and the evolution wears off after the battle ends – but the Mega Stones themselves can be used repeatedly.

Pokémon GO has been teasing the arrival of Mega Evolutions for months now, and players have been curious as to how the feature will be implemented in the game. Given that there are already has more than a fair share of differences from the main series of games, this is a fair thing to wonder. The feature was originally confirmed back in late July, alongside several other major changes, but further details were scarce.

However, the latest update of Pokémon GO has gone live today and with it, Mega Evolutions have officially been added and details have been announced. The Pokémon GO studio tweeted a link to its website, detailing how Mega Evolutions will work (for now anyway). First, instead of indefinite Mega Stones, Pokémon will achieve Mega Evolution using, “Mega Energy,” a resource obtained from completing Mega Raids. The faster trainers defeat a raid boss, the more Mega Energy they receive for that particular beast. At the moment, only four Pokémon have their Mega Evolutions in the game: Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, and Beedrill.

In addition to boosting their own stats, Mega Evolved Pokémon will provide boosts to other trainers’ creatures during raids, and Pokémon whose types match any of the Mega Evolution types in a conflict will receive an additional attack boost. After trainers Mega Evolve a monster, the Mega Energy required to Mega Evolve that specific Pokémon will decrease from then onward. However, Mega Evolutions also come with quite a few caveats, some of which are similar to the ones in the main series games. Like in the main series, trainers can only have one Mega Evolved Pokémon at a time; if they were to Mega Evolve another Pokémon, the first Mega-Evolved creature will revert back to its original form. Mega Evolutions also can not defend gyms, nor battle in the GO’s Battle League (although the post makes it sound as if that could one day change).

Despite having restrictions that may upset some trainers, Mega Evolution will be the next big addition to a still-growing game. According to the Pokémon GO roadmap, September will see several events focused on the new Mega Evolutions, including increased raids, special research assignments, and a rotating cast of legendary raids. Pokémon GO is still riding high off the success of GO! Fest 2020 and now, with the introduction of Mega Evolutions, the mobile gaming giant will surely expect to keep that momentum going perhaps through the end of the year.
