Pokémon GO NEEDS Better Event Incentives

Gamers were given an event incentive during The Game Awards 2020 this year if they happened to be playing Pokémon GO. Niantic gave special bonuses for playing the game between 4PM December 10 to 4PM December 11. However, the rewards and bonuses that were being offered may have felt underwhelming for frequent players of Pokémon GO, and the event fell even further in expectations when it was announced the Pokémon players would see more frequently in the wild was nothing more than a Wooper.

Pokémon GO did hand out some standard desirable bonuses, like increased Stardust rates while battling and Incense being more effective. Players were also given the chance to use a Charged TM to help Shadow Pokémon forget the charged move ‘Frustration’ as well as to have a higher chance of encountering a Team GO Rocket Grunt at Pokéstops. Any event that offers a chance to farm Stardust can be handy, but none of these bonuses seemed particularly special for Pokémon GO players viewing The Game Awards.

What really fell flat for Pokémon GO however, was the announcement of a Pokémon appearing in large quantities in the wild. With so many different Pokémon to pick from, and so many ways to make a Pokémon for an event special with hats and decoration, it is frustrating that the choice PokemonGoLive announced for the night turned out to be an increased rate of Wooper. The small Ground and Water type isn’t anything particularly special, and it wasn’t given a cute award to hold, or a little hat. Instead, it was just an infestation of Wooper for players to sift through.

Pokémon GO Could Have Done Better At The Game Awards

While there was a chance to find a Shadow Wooper or a Shiny Wooper, neither of these variants is particularly amazing. Shadow Pokémon, who have been corrupted by the evil of Team Go Rocket, take a purification process to be able to use to their full potential, making them a costly use of Stardust and Candies for players. Going through the purification process on a Wooper isn’t really worth the time or effort. It would have been more exciting if Pokémon GO had initiated an increased rate of starter Pokémon, or an increased chance to find a rare Pokémon in Raid Battles.

While the idea of a ‘Wooper Watch’ sounds cute, the reality is that Wooper don’t do much, and its evolution Quagsire isn’t any more exciting. Tuning into events like The Game Awards offers players a unique opportunity to participate in something special, but instead Pokémon GO missed the mark. Whether it is a specially-decorated Pokémon or a chance at Shadow Pokémon that are more popular or useful in battles, Pokémon GO has plenty of options to pick from to up the stakes for fans engaging in events. Opportunities like The Game Awards are a chance to bring fans of a game together, and using that opportunity to benefit gameplay in a unique way makes the experience more fun for everyone.
