Pokémon GO Online Multiplayer Coming Next Year

In a recent announcement, Niantic confirmed that beginning in early 2020, online multiplayer will be coming to Pokémon GO. The online multiplayer system will be called the GO Battle League, and once it’s released, you’ll no longer have to be sitting directly next to someone in order to battle them, adding yet another feature to the massively popular mobile game.

Although you will be able to battle with other trainers and their Pokémon online, Niantic is looking to uphold their philosophy in encouraging players to get out and be active while playing Pokémon GO. You won’t be able to battle online while you simply sit on the couch. Instead, you’ll have to travel to a nearby area, at which point you’ll be able to begin an online battle.

What makes this announcement even more exciting, is the fact that Niantic will also be including a ranking system within the GO Battle League. Like other online multiplayer games, you’ll gain xp and improve your rank after victories. There will also reportedly be a leaderboard, where you’ll be able to compare your progress with the best players around the world.

Whether or not there will be an unranked mode is yet to be announced. Additionally, Niantic hasn’t explained whether or not you’ll be able to directly battle players on your friends list using the online system, or if it will strictly consist of random matchmaking. Players have been itching for the ability to battle and trade with their friends online for some time now, but Niantic may stick to their guns in order to make sure that the game continues to encourage outside activity.

Pokémon GO, which has probably encouraged players’ to be physically activity better than any other game we’ve seen, continues to be a huge success, reaching over one billion downloads just a few months ago. The game continues to receive various updates and events in order to keep players interested, the most recent being the introduction of generation five Pokémon from the Black & White games, as well as a Halloween-themed seasonal event.

Niantic will look to continue the game’s growth in early 2020 with this new online multiplayer system. The update will surely increase the game’s competitive landscape, and will give players another reason to search for the most powerful Pokémon they can get their hands on. In the meantime, keep catching ’em all, and look forward to the GO Battle League launching some time early next year.
