Pokemon GO has been something of a marvel. The popular mobile game took the world by storm when it first released, leading to massive groups of people in public parks and other spaces hunting for any of Pokemon GO’s elusive monsters that they could get their hands on. That’s spawned quite a few interesting stories, from people getting arrested while playing Pokemon GO, to even more bizarre occurrences.
However, social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic has made it difficult to play the game, so much so that developer Niantic has changed Pokemon GO during the coronavirus pandemic to make it easier to play from home. Still, that hasn’t stopped people from going out and catching Pokemon, including a mother and daughter that recently found themselves in an interesting spot while playing.
Amy Kellems was recently playing Pokemon GO with her daughter in their car, stopping in neighborhood streets to catch Pokemon here and there. That led to residents making “multiple calls” to police about a suspicious vehicle frequently pulling over in a neighborhood. Kellems and her 12-year-old daughter were then pulled over by an officer, though they were let go after explaining that they were using the game as a way to get out of the house while respecting social distancing.
Apparently, word of what had happened reached the neighbors, as Kellems received a Pokemon-themed cake shortly after with the words “Sorry we called the cops on you” written on it from the neighbors as an apology. Kellem’s Facebook post about the incident has since gone viral, with more than 77,000 reactions on the social media platform.
Strange things tend to happen with Pokemon GO. Stories frequently pop up strange happenings, with one Italian man arrested for playing Pokemon GO during a lockdown. Few other games have had such a demonstrable effect with their popularity, so many of the stories that emerge from the mobile game tend to go viral quickly.
It likely won’t be the last story players hear from the game. While not as big of a deal as it once was, Pokemon GO has remained incredibly popular within its niche, with some dedicated players using multiple phones to play the game, sometimes to an extreme degree.
