Pokémon GO Players Who Missed Throwback Challenges Can Buy Their Way In

Get ready trainers, Pokémon GO is offering a second chance for any incomplete Throwback Challenge tasks—but it comes at a price.

The Pokémon game that encourages fans of the series to get out of their houses to catch ‘em all swept the world back in the summer of 2016 and they’ve been trying to recreate that magic ever since. Currently, the Niantic game is offering week long events highlighting Pokémon from specific regions throughout the world. So far the events have covered Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn, with Sinnoh on deck to be launched in the next few days. These events see a higher spawn rate for Pokémon of that region, also featuring new shiny versions and Pikachu with special hats.

Like past research challenges, these Throwback Challenges have players focus on specific tasks to earn rewards, all of which are just boxes to check off for the big prize at the end. For example, the Throwback Challenge for Kanto had nine task levels to clear—with things like playing with buddy Pokémon to trigger a muk encounter—in order to earn a chance to catch Mewtwo. The endgame for the Special Research Challenge is encountering and catching Pokémon from the Unova and Galar regions.

These region-based challenges have to be completed within the allotted week-long time limit in order to be able to participate in the Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 Special Research. But now there is a way to buy back into the main event for those who didn’t hatch enough eggs, missing their window the first time. By purchasing an in-app ticket for $7.99, Pokémon GO players can assure a spot for themselves. Those who are already on track by completing the challenges the first time around can also buy a ticket to alter their rewards. These tickets will be available for the duration of the final event, from June 3 to June 8.

These scheduled events have been crowd-pleasers in the past and this is essentially the culmination of the entire Pokémon experience so far. There are still a few more weeks left to hop back on the Pokémon GO train and become the very best, like no one ever was.
