Pokémon GO developer Niantic has responded to concerns about mega evolutions in its popular augmented reality game, promising to listen to players’ concerns about the mechanic in the future. The mobile game has gone from strength to strength this year, with revenues jumping despite lockdown measures being put in place throughout much of the world.

Mega evolutions were first added to the Pokémon franchise in the sixth generation. They allow users to upgrade their collected Pokémon into more powerful forms, with better stats and abilities. Some creatures can even change their type entirely during a mega evolution, although only a few species can actually use the feature. Players can use the mechanic once every battle but have unlimited use of the mega stones that trigger mega evolutions. That’s not the case in Pokémon GO, where mega energy is used to cause mega evolutions.

Last week, mega evolutions were added to Pokémon GO for the first time, allowing players to use upgraded versions of certain creatures. Superpowered evolutions of Charizard, Beedrill, Venasaur, and Blastoise are all available in the augmented reality title as part of a special themed event throughout September. However, fans are upset over the cost of accessing mega evolutions, as they have to spend mega energy to use the feature, which lasts for just four hours before disappearing. With mega energy only available in Raids, players are effectively being forced into buying microtransactions to use mega evolutions regularly. But it seems that Niantic is aware of the issue and the developer has now promised to listen to player feedback as it attempts to switch up how mega evolution will work in the future.

Trainers, we are excited that we were able to introduce Mega Evolutions into the world of #PokemonGO. We are actively listening to your feedback and look forward to sharing more about how this feature will grow in the future.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Niantic has been proactive in making a number of changes to Pokémon GO to keep it playable during lockdown measures and stay-at-home orders. For instance, the studio has altered the spawn rates of Pokémon to make stronger creatures appear more frequently. Niantic has also included frequent special deals and allowed players to access Raids remotely to keep the game relevant.

Considering how much goodwill Niantic has generated over the last few months by keeping Pokémon GO playable during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is surprising to see the company throw much of it away by introducing a clear pay-to-win feature. While Pokémon GO has always had microtransactions, the addition of mega fuel has been particularly contentious with fans. The anger seems to arise from the lack of ways to gain mega energy outside of buying Raid passes in Pokémon GO. Hopefully, Niantic can make mega evolutions work in a better way in a future update.
