After Pokemon GO’s incredible, nearly unprecedented success in the mobile space, it makes sense for other developers to attempt to copy the formula. One Pokemon GO clone in particular that has done somewhat well for itself is The Walking Dead: Our World, which has players killing zombies instead of catching Pokemon. The Walking Dead: Our World lifts much of its gameplay from Pokemon GO, but there are a couple of things that Niantic’s mobile ARG could steal from The Walking Dead to make it an even better experience.
In The Walking Dead: Our World, players have access to flares that allow players to reach content in areas where they may not physically be for the duration that the flare is active. So for example, there could be an epic loot crate somewhere in The Walking Dead: Our World, and someone can shoot a flare near its location, which would in turn allow everyone in that person’s group to snag the loot if they do so before the flare expires.
If a similar feature were added to Pokemon GO, it seems like it would have some obvious benefits, with one of the biggest being that it would help players in rural areas more actively compete in raids. As it stands, many of the higher-tier raids like legendary raids require at least seven people to complete, making it virtually impossible for some players to experience a major part of Pokemon GO. A flare system would allow other players to jump in and help, even if they don’t live near the person who shot off the flare.
Another reason why a flare system would be beneficial to Pokemon GO is that it would potentially help players catch some region-exclusive Pokemon. To date, there have been very few opportunities for Pokemon GO players to add region-exclusive Pokemon to their collection outside of spending thousands of dollars to travel to the places where these Pokemon are located. Right now, a limited-time event will allow players to hatch first generation regionals from 7km eggs, but their hatch rate is a mere 12.5%, meaning some can hatch eggs every day and still not get all of the regional-exclusives they need for their collection by the time the event ends on September 30.
Besides the flare feature, Pokemon GO could also benefit by taking the clan feature from The Walking Dead: Our World. In The Walking Dead: Our World, players create clans that then allow anyone who is in that clan to chat, shoot off flares for each other, and more. A feature like this could help Pokemon GO players better coordinate with the people on their friends list and communicate with each other about potential raid opportunities or rare Pokemon encounters, whereas now they pretty much have to rely on luck or third party messaging apps like Discord.
While The Walking Dead: Our World may never reach Pokemon GO’s popularity, the game still has some genuinely good ideas that Niantic’s title could steal to improve itself. Whether or not that ever comes to pass remains to be seen, but Niantic is constantly updating Pokemon GO with new content and features, so it’s certainly possible.
