Pokémon GO What to Expect in February’s Kanto Tour Event

2021 marks the fifth anniversary of Pokémon GO, as well as the 25th anniversary of the entire franchise. To celebrate, the game is hosting a special event. Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto will take players back to the region where it all began, during an all-day event on Feb. 20.

This global, virtual, ticketed event allows trainers from around the world to choose which version they want to participate in: Red or Green. Similar to the original game, each version will have its own exclusive Pokémon. Niantic encourages trainers to trade with each other to ensure they catch ’em all, though players can hunt for all 150 Pokémon from the Kanto region until Feb. 27.

Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto will take place Saturday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time. All Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto region will appear in the wild, in raids and in Research Task encounters; they will also be attracted to Incense and obtainable via Evolution.

Players who collect the first 150 Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto region will earn rewards yet to be revealed; to manage this task in one day, it will be necessary to trade with other trainers. Players will be able to track their progress in the Today View, with something identical or at least similar to the Collection Challenge tracking.

For the first time ever, all 150 Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto region will be available as Shiny Pokémon, with players more likely to encounter certain Shiny Pokémon in the wild, depending on the event version they select. Additionally, all 150 Kanto Pokémon will have their Shiny form available after the event is over. More Candy will be rewarded for catching Kanto Pokémon, most likely just double the catch Candy.

If trainers don’t collect all 150 Kanto Pokémon during the event, they have until Feb. 27 at 11:59 p.m. PT to catch them. This extra time can be used to trade Pokémon, evolve Pokémon, battle in raids and encounter Pokémon after completing Research Tasks to finish the collection and claim the rewards. To help with trading, especially with the two different versions, trading distance will be increased to 40 km.

There will also be an event-exclusive Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto Special Research story, which players can complete to earn an encounter with a special Pokémon. This will most likely be Mewtwo, which is #150 in the Kanto lineup. Oddly, Mew is #151, even though Mewtwo came after. At any rate, once players complete the first Special Research line, they will be able to access the second event-exclusive Special Research story, meant to be completed over a long period of time, which will result in a Shiny Mew.

Tickets for this event are currently available through the Pokémon GO in-app shop for $11.99 USD. Players who purchase before Feb. 3 will get a bonus, free ticket for the paid February Community Day event.
