Pokémon GOs Buddy Event Is Live Right Now

Pokémon GO is currently running the Buddy Up Event, featuring two rare region-specific Pokémon. The Buddy Up event focuses on players forming closer bonds with their Pokémon Buddy and emphasizes tasks like walking and playing with it.

The Buddy Up event runs until April 27 at 10 p.m. PDT. There are plenty of rare Pokémon up for grabs, including the region-specific Volbeat and Ilumise. Other Pokémon you might find are Alolan Meowth, Chansey, Eevee, Feebas, Lillipup, and Joltik. These can be found in the wild or as eggs. Players will also be able to catch Woobat, February’s Research Breakthrough Pokémon, and receive special Field-Research tasks from Pokéstops. The new Field-Research tasks are event specific, so they will only be available during the Buddy Up event. However, if you claim the challenge and don’t complete it, you can finish it and still earn the rewards after the event. The tasks are as follows:

  • Give your buddy a treat (Alolan Meowth)
  • Take a snapshot of your buddy (Volbeat)
  • Play with your buddy (Ilumise)
  • Earn a candy walking with your buddy (Woobat)

The two region-specific Rare Pokémon, Volbeat and Ilumise are usually only available in certain real regions of the world. Volbeat, for example, is restricted to Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Ilumise can be found in the Americas and Africa. During the Buddy Up event, anyone can find them anywhere, including in their Shiny form.

During the course of the Buddy Up event, your buddy will bring you more gifts, and it will take half the distance to earn buddy candy and hearts. If you evolve any Pokémon, you’ll get twice the normal amount of Stardust, even when you evolve non-buddies. Your buddy will also become excited more quicky, and if you feed them Berries or Poffins it’ll stay on the map with you for longer.

Pokémon GO’s Buddy Up event comes as most of the world is restricted to one form of exercise a day, due to lockdown laws. The event could provide welcome relief for players fed up with one walk a day. It will surely liven up boring walks for younger players, and create motivation to get outside. It also provides much-needed entertainment during these difficult times. The Buddy Up event is an excellent way of passing the time on lockdown and will bring color and light-heartedness into your life.
