Inkay made its Pokemon Go debut earlier this week, and some players are already reporting what is a pretty major issue when encountering it on certain phones.

The gradual addition of all 900 Pokemon to Pokemon Go continued this week as the AR game welcomed Inkay and Malamar to its ranks. Inkay can currently be found in the wild to celebrate the start of Pokemon Go’s Psychic Spectacular event. To get Malamar you’ll need to evolve the dark psychic-type, and you won’t just need candies to make it happen.

Those who have played the Pokemon games in which Inkay was introduced should be familiar with the unique circumstances needed to make it evolve. Once it reaches a high enough level, you need to turn your console upside down to trigger its evolution. Or, in the case of Pokemon Go, your phone.

A pretty fun mechanic to lift from the console games, but not one Niantic appears to have completely thought out. Owners of certain phones are already reporting that they can’t evolve their Inkays, as you can see in the Reddit post below. Some have suggested turning off the phone’s auto-rotate feature so that the screen doesn’t follow as you turn the device, but that doesn’t appear to fix the problem.

The device being used by the poster is a Samsung Galaxy a10e. Some who have replied to the post have highlighted that particular model doesn’t have a gyroscope which means the phone can’t tell when it has been turned upside down. If that’s the case, then there may not be a fix other than Niantic altering the way in which Inkay can be evolved in Pokemon Go.

The only solution for the time being if you are encountering the issue is to log on to a different phone and evolve your Inkay that way, although that might not be an option for some people. Niantic is yet to address the problem and it’s unclear how many different devices will be affected by the issue. The game’s task force recently revealed it has a lot of room to grow. Perhaps that group is discussing the Inkay issue as you read this.
