You’ve got to feel for the Ice-types of the Pokémon world, haven’t you? They just never seem to catch a break from Game Freak. Often considered one of the worst typings in the game (only Bug really gives it a run for its money there), Ice is a powerful offensive type but (like Rock) weak to absolutely everything ever in return.

Oftentimes, then, competitive player will use Ice coverage in place of Ice-types themselves. This is a shame, because they’re missing out on some truly unique Pokémon. Today, we’re taking a look at Snorunt, its unique evolution options and some of its other quirks.

10 It Simply Evolves By Level…

Right from the start of our very first journeys through Gen I, we learned about the most common method of Pokémon evolution: simple levelling. In RPGs in general, this is the standard way of powering up characters, learning new techniques and such, so it’s no surprise that this would also be the way forward for a lot of these critters. You want a majestic Charizard? Better get to levelling up that Charmander!

Sure enough, this is also the way to evolve your humble little Snorunt. At level 42 (and onwards), it will evolve into Glalie. There’s much more to the story than that, though!

9 …But Female Snorunt Have Another Option Too

Many Pokémon evolve simply by levelling up, as we know. Lots of them also evolve by exposure to a certain item, particularly stones (such as the classic Fire Stone or Thunder Stone). Very few Pokemon, however, has the luxury to choose between both methods, but Snorunt sure can.

Female Snorunt have another path. Through use of a Dawn Stone, the player can nab themselves a Froslass instead. This female-only form has a number of tricks up its sleeve, and is probably the better of Snorunt’s two options.

8 Not Only Males Evolve Into Glalie

That probably all sounds simple enough, but there’s one curious detail about all this that even veterans may not have known. While only female Snorunt can evolve into Froslass, this doesn’t mean that Glalie is a male-exclusive form. Simply level your female Snorunt up to 42 and you’ll be the proud owner of a female Glalie!

This is quite unusual, so it’s no surprise that fans might not know this. In fact, as Bulbapedia reports, Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s trophy for Snorunt mistakenly states that Glalie is a male-exclusive evolution!

7 Mega Glalie Is Surprisingly Strong…

Was surprisingly strong, we should say. After all, it looks like Mega Evolution has been long forgotten now. Still, this certainly bears mentioning, because Mega Glalie defined exactly what the concept was supposed to be about: giving previously forgotten or obscure Pokémon a chance to shine.

Mega Glalie was definitely bottom tier as far as Mega Evolutions were concerned, but it could certainly tear things up. Its boosted offenses and Speed meant it could really go to town on the opposition in the right situation, and it had a heck of an explosive secret weapon up its sleeve too.

6 …And You Did Not Want To Be Around When It Explodes

Mega Glalie’s major selling point was its Ability Refrigerate. This changed all of its Normal-type moves to Ice-type, and gave them a further power boost. As a result, it was usually seen rocking Return or Double-Edge, which were elevated to ‘oh heck, that smarts’ on the Pain-o-Meter. The truly devastating move in its arsenal, however, was Explosion.

Of course, the user faints after using Explosion, but it has tremendous power to make up for it. Very few Pokémon have STAB on this move, but Mega Glalie got the Refrigerate bonus on it. As a result, if a Pokémon didn’t resist Ice, they were in for a world of pain here.

5 It’s Quite A Moody Little Critter

Back to Snorunt itself, its standard Abilities are either Inner Focus or Ice Body. There’s nothing particularly notable or surprising about either of those. For its Hidden Ability, however, it was given access to the most volatile and RNG-reliant Ability in the series: Moody.

At the end of each turn, Moody will increase one of that Pokémon’s stats by two stages, before dropping another by one. The stats chosen are entirely random, meaning that Moody can ruin your entire day as easily as it could your opponent’s. You could pull off amazing things like boosting Glalie’s Attack (Glalie also gets Moody, but Froslass doesn’t) to silly levels before Mega Evolving it, but that’s completely unreliable. Fun, though!

4 Froslass Is Also Super Unique

So, yes. We’ve already waxed lyrical about Glalie and the interesting things it can bring to the table. In a world full of absurdly strong, meta-defining and tedious Mega Evolutions, Mega Glalie was the more unusual choice. We could appreciate players who tried to make it work.

For now, though, it’s time to take a closer look at Froslass, another very unique Pokémon. It’s an Ice- and Ghost-type, for starters, a combination that’s still exclusive to it. Its offenses are very average but equal, allowing it to pull off a surprise physical or mixed set, and it has access to handy moves like Spikes and the tricky Destiny Bond. It’s performed super well in the past as an offensive lead, a role few Pokémon are well suited to (Azelf and Infernape being other examples from recent years).

3 Froslass Is Absolutely Terrifying

As it’s very frail and its offenses aren’t really anything that special, Froslass has never really been a Pokémon to wreak havoc in competitive matches. There’s much more to the equation than just that, however. This thing is a true terror, as the Pokédex reveals.

“When it finds humans or Pokémon it likes, it freezes them and takes them to its chilly den, where they become decorations,” Pokémon Sun states. This apparently not being horrifying enough, Pokémon Moon adds, “the food it most relishes is the souls of men.” Suffice it to say, then, if you’re ever invited to Froslass’s place for a dinner party, you might want to decline.

2 It’s A Rare Pure Ice-Type

While Froslass is also part Ghost-type, Snorunt and Glalie are both pure Ice. This also makes this interesting Pokémon more unique, as Ice is the most uncommon typing in the game and pure Ice-types are especially rare.

Not including their different forms and evolutions, there are only ten other Pokémon that are just Ice-type: the Alolan Vulpix line, Snowy Castform, Regice, Glaceon, the Galarian Darumaka line, the Vanillite line, the Cubchoo line, Cryogonal, the Bergmite line and Eiscue.

1 Glalie’s A Monster As Well

Yes, all of that soul-eating and living-creature-decorating is horrifying enough, but we’ve come to expect that from Ghost Pokémon. Their backstories are infamous for providing some of the darkest content in the series.

What of the Ice-type Glalie, though? It looks like some manner of vengeful spirit, but it isn’t a Ghost. Surely it’s harmless enough? What say you, Pokémon Ultra Sun? “It freezes its prey and chews them whole. However, it prefers to eat Pokémon like Vanillite that are already frozen.” Crunching through helpless, frozen prey while its still alive is one thing, but those adorable Vanillite?
