The latest Pokemon Journeys opening sequence teases future Alolan adventures, exciting Legendary Pokemon, and even a Fossil Pokemon joining the team.

Pokemon Journeys: The Series has followed in the footsteps of Pokemon the Series: Sun & Moon and its other predecessors by allowing fans to explore the core Pokemon games’ events alongside Ash Ketchum. The latest episode introduced an updated opening sequence, which teases at a new ancient addition to one of the protagonists’ teams.
About 45 seconds into the opening, Ash is shown sending his team out into a battle. Shortly thereafter, Ash’s sassy Pikachu lets out a Thunderbolt, which is then evaded by a suddenly-appearing Aerodactyl. Now, this could be a freshly caught Aerodactyl training with Ash’s own team, or a wild Aerodactyl Ash is trying to catch, however, it’s actually more likely that the Fossil Pokemon may be joining Goh’s team instead.
Just after the Pikachu v. Aerodactyl sequence, it’s made clear that Ash is actually battling Goh, as Ash’s Gengar proceeds to launch an attack at Goh’s shy Sobble. The sequence in question is barely 5 seconds of the total opening, so it’s easy to miss, but viewers can clearly see Ash’s Gengar battling Goh’s Raboot and Sobble, shortly after Ash’s Pikachu tries to zap an Aerodactyl.
Fans were quick to point out that the Aerodactyl is most probably going to Goh, as it would be an interesting foil to Ash’s electrifying Pikachu, but the mystery remains unsolved. The end of the video, which features both trainers’ lineups, does not include Aerodactyl on either adventurer’s side. Considering the rumors of Ash finally retiring after Pokemon Journeys, a Kantonian sidekick feels like an appropriate addition to Goh’s team.
Aside from Aerodactyl, this video has also confirmed a return to Alola, and the inclusion of Galarian and Kantonian favorites (like the three Legendary Birds, Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos) in upcoming episodes of Pokemon Journeys. The video also introduces fans to a remix of the previous opening theme, “1.2.3.”, simply credited to “Nishikawa-kun” and “Kirisho”. While the original song was performed by After The Rain, these two names refer to Takanori Ishikawa (aka T.M. Revolution) and Sho “Kirisho” Kiryuin (of J-rock band, Golden Bomber) instead.
