Pokémon Gens 8 & 7 both featured an Ice-Type variant of a Fire Pokémon, so Legends: Arceus may go in a similar direction. Here’s how it could do it.

The possibilities for Hisuian Forms in the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus are almost uncountable, but there is one that’s arguably stronger than most. Fire-Types becoming Ice-Types is a tentative trend in the Generations in which variants have been introduced, so there’s a chance that it will continue in Hisui. Which Fire-Type will become Ice, if any, is impossible to say, but given the fact that the game’s Pokédex so far spans Gens 1-5, there are quite a few species that could get this treatment.
In both Pokémon Generations that have featured regional forms so far, Gen 7 (Sun and Moon) and Gen 8 (Sword and Shield), one Fire-Type Pokémon species has been changed into an Ice-Type. Although every new regional forms gain new Types, Fire-to-Ice stands out both because it’s been in both Generations and because the two elements are polar opposites, giving the species an almost 180° change. Hisuian Voltorb sparked a new wave of rumors, and its unusual Type combination means that more unexpected Types for regional forms may be on the way. It may not be enough to definitively say that a Fire-Type Pokémon will become Ice-Type in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, but it’s certainly enough to make it a prominent possibility.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus has so far shown species from the first five generations of games, so there’s quite a bit of source material to draw from. Although it might seem that the candidates are tough to pin down, if the current Fire-to-Ice-Type variants are observed carefully, then a pattern may narrow down the list. A number of Fire-Types have also been shown in their original forms in current trailers and gameplay footage, so they can be eliminated as candidates. The question of which species could get new forms may be easier to answer than first thought. Hisuian Pokémon may not enter the mainline series, so the game might not be under any obligation to make them blend well with others in the series.
Which Fire Pokémon Could Become Ice-Types In Legends: Arceus?
There are two Pokémon who have transformed from Fire-Types to Ice-Types in each Generation with regional forms so far: Vulpix and Ninetails in Alola, and Darumaka and Darmanitan in Galar. The two families might seem unrelated, but they do have some commonalities that could help narrow down the list of which Pokémon will get a Hisuian Ice-Type. Firstly, they are both pure Fire-Types with no secondary typing aside from Darmanitan’s Zen Mode, which can be ignored since not every member of the species has it. Second, they are both a single-evolution line with no third form. And lastly, their evolutionary line was resolved within their home region and has not had any baby Pokémon or third evolutions added in another Generation. Hisui’s forms could follow Galarian Pokémon variants and use the same criteria. The last point may not hold as much significance as the first two, but it is still a valid clue.
If these three, arguably two, trends are kept in mind, then the list of candidates shrinks considerably, especially when considering the species that already have been revealed in trailers or have a regional variant. As a matter of fact, there’s only one that meets all of these criteria, and that’s Pansear and Simisear. This by no means makes an Ice-Type Pansear a certainty, however. The species is a member of a Grass/Fire/Water trio along with Pansage and Panpour, and giving just one of the three a new form seems odd. If a Fire-Type does become an Ice-Type in the game, it’s more likely to break one of the trends. Sadly, Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ regional variants are still shrouded in mystery for the most part.
If the trend of pure Fire-Types is broken, then the list expands to include Slugma, Houndour, Numel, Litwick, Larvesta, and their evolutions. If a Fire-Type without a single-evolution line is used, then Torkoal and Heatmor also become possible candidates. Of course, this assumes that only Pokémon from Gens 1-5 will be in the game, which are the ones shown so far. If the developers choose to include Gen 6, then Litleo and Fletchinder also become possibilities. Which of them would be chosen or what any of them would look like can’t be said for certain, but they could become fan favorites upon the game’s release.
Other Possibilities For Fire And Ice-Types In Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Of course, Fire isn’t the only Type that could become Ice in the new game, and there’s always the possibility that the trend could reverse. Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ ever-important Pokédex could contain more diversity than thought so far. Fans could just as well find themselves surprised by an Ice-Type that’s become Fire. The number of combinations for the two Types are almost as vast as the world of Pokémon itself, so many of them might seem like a shot in the dark, but some just might be further within reach than others. Past regional variants and some other species just might provide some insight into some of the possibilities surrounding Fire and Ice-Types in the game.
Aside from Vulpix and Darumaka, there is one other Ice-Type variant each in Gens 7 and 8. Sandshrew and Sandslash became Ice-Types, and Mr. Mime gained both an Ice typing and a new evolution. Although neither sets a trend as to which Pokémon may become Ice-Type in Legends: Arceus, it does show that there are other possibilities besides Fire. One argument for this is Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ disturbing Hisuian Zorua origins. The species was unable to survive in Hisui due in part to the region’s harsh environment, which is why it became a Ghost-Type. This implies that most Pokémon would need some amount of adaptation in order to survive in the game’s snowy areas. The trailers and gameplay leaks so far have shown little of them aside from the Hisuian Zorua reveal, so the environment and the species that inhabit it are largely unknown.
It’s also possible that the trend could reverse course and make an Ice-Type a Fire-Type. The only Fire regional variant so far is Alolan Marowak, so there are plenty of species, Ice or not, that could receive a new Fire form. Fire-Type versions of Smoochum, Vanillite, Cubchoo, and more could be a refreshing take on the species and key members of some players’ teams. Just like its snow areas, the fiery and volcanic areas of Pokémon Legends: Arceus haven’t been shown, so there are many possibilities.
