For many fans, both longtime and new, Pokemon Legends: Arceus appears to be the shot in the arm that the franchise needed. While players will ultimately continue to capture wild creatures known as Pokemon, the latest game in the popular franchise mixes things up through a number of new mechanics and features. This time around, players are part of an expedition team charged with studying and researching Pokemon in the pre-Sinnoh region called Hisui.
While a lot has changed from the previous entries in the franchise, such as how players can catch new Pokemon, there’s a lot of elements that are making a return as well. Evolution stones and their ability to evolve certain Pokemon like Eevee are back and perhaps easier to find than they have been in the past. Even the starters available in Hisui are returning favorites with Rowlet, Cyndaquil, and Oshawatt.
The Friendship mechanic also makes its return in Pokemon Legends: Arceus and remains important for a variety of reasons. While friendship rises over time, here are a few tips on ranking it up even faster than normal.
What Is Friendship?
Originally introduced as loyalty inside of the Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal games, the friendship mechanic is essentially a gauge for how much a Pokemon likes their trainer. Interestingly enough, Friendship was added to Pokemon Yellow, but at that point in time, it only impacted Pikachu.
Friendship affects a number of different things within the games including the availability of certain items, being tougher during battles, and the power levels of Return and Frustration. Friendship level also impacts certain Pokemon’s ability to evolve including Riolu, Chansey, Eevee, Pichu, and more.
How to Earn Friendship
Naturally, Friendship makes its return in Pokemon Legends: Arceus and continues to be important for evolutions and more. Thankfully, the game gives players multiple ways to earn Friendship, with some methods proving to be faster than others.
Battling
The first method is the most straightforward: battling. Using Pokemon to battle both wild and trainer owned creatures will slowly increase their friendship levels, more so for a victory. Players should send out the Pokemon they want to gain increased friendship with often in battles to raise it faster. In addition, using items on them during battles also provides a boost to friendship as well.
Feeding EXP Candy
A mechanic brought over from Pokemon Sword & Shield, players will come across various sizes of candy while exploring the world. Using these will grant XP to the Pokemon they’re used on, instead of raising a single level like Rare Candy. When feeding Pokemon EXP Candy, their friendship meter also rises, so the more they’re fed, the faster the gage will climb. Candies can be found by beating Alpha Pokemon. About 20 small EXP candies is generally enough to increase 1 level.
Gathering Resources
For the first time in the Pokemon series, players can use their Pokemon to collect materials and resources found while exploring. This includes things like harvesting berry trees or mining tumblestone veins. Players can press the X button to switch to the Pokemon menu, then aiming a Pokeball at the resource, and then the Pokemon will hop out to collect it before returning. The nice thing about this mechanic is that the gathering Pokemon does gain a bit of friendship and XP for helping out.
Checking Friendship
For players wanting to evolve particular Pokemon based off Friendship levels, they’ll need to return to Jubilife Village in order to check how the process is going. Belamy is the NPC to see to check friendship levels, though players won’t have access to him right away.
Players will first need to finish Kleavor and Mission 7, at which point Belamy will hand out the Measuring Your Capability request. He’ll ask to see a Pokemon with a high friendship level, which likely will mean the starter Pokemon as it will have been with the player the longest to this point. However, any high friendship Pokemon will do. Once this request is fulfilled, Belamy is unlocked and able to check the friendship levels of any Pokemon brought to him.
