Pokemon Legends: Arceus includes something called an Arc Phone. A pretty snazzy piece of tech players will receive very early on in the game.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus arrives on Nintendo Switch in 2022 and promises to be a Pokemon game unlike anything players will have experienced before in a number of ways. It’s set way in the past, for starters. Technically in the Sinnoh region, but the events of Arceus took place so long ago that the area you’ll explore goes by a different name: the Hisui region.

Despite the time period in which it is set, and the surroundings being inspired by feudal Japan, Arceus includes some sort of mysteriously powered smartphone. The Arc Phone, which was first revealed this week along with an all-new trailer for the game, will be given to players very early on in proceedings. Probably at about the same time as you would receive a Pokedex in a regular Pokemon game.

At the moment, it’s unclear why during this era of the Pokemon timeline Pokeballs need to be held shut by zips, your Pokedex appears to be little more than a journal (as in a real one you have to write in), but you have access to a pretty swish looking iPhone throughout. The Arc Phone will include an interactive map of the region and also list your current missions.

While it’s fun to poke fun at Pokemon revealing a game set hundreds of years before trainers used bulky home computers to store their Pokemon in virtual boxes for having a smartphone, it’s clear that the mechanic may have been inspired by Breath of the Wild. The Arc Phone sounds a lot like the Zelda game’s Sheikah Slate. An item available to Link powered by ancient technology. It’s likely the Arc Phone functions in a similar way.

Speaking of the once hard-to-access Pokemon boxes that can now be used on the go in games like Sword and Shield, that will not be the case in Legends: Arceus. Neither boxes nor the aforementioned home PCs on which trainers used to access them have been invented yet in the Hisui region. Players will be limited to six Pokemon on their person at a time and will need to visit their pasture should they want to make any changes to their traveling team.
