Pokémon Legends: Arceus will take place in an ancient version of the Sinnoh Region called the Hisui Region and will include new regional variants and evolutions of previous Pokémon.

As seen during the presentation, Pokémon Legends: Arceus will debut new variants of Growlithe and Braviary, with added regional evolutions of Stantler and Basculin.

Hisuian Growlithe features a small, bushy crop of hair covering its eyes and gathered around its neck. They allegedly travel with a partner and defend their territory despite their general wariness of strangers. A small point at the top of its head may look like a wart, but it is actually a small, fragile rock that it can use to attack when deemed necessary.

This indicates that Hisuian Growlithe will be a Rock-type Pokémon. The Pokémon Company has yet to confirm whether Arcanine, Growlithe’s evolution, will also receive a regional variant. It is also possible that Hisuian Growlithe may evolve into a new Pokémon entirely, although that is also unconfirmed.

Hisuian Braviary gets a flashy makeover from its original form, complete with a large, eye-like psychic flame atop its brow. This psychic “mask” resembles that of Joker from Persona 5 and seems similar in design to a masquerade mask. Sections of the trailer show the player gliding around with this Braviary using a hang-glider-like grip.

Hisuian Braviary is said to “imbue its screeches with psychic power to generate shockwaves,” and “comes to Hisui in the winter.” This indicates a Psychic typing, most likely in addition to its initial Flying-type, and a special-attack-oriented combat style. It is unclear whether its pre-evolution Rufflet will receive a regional variant.

Stantler will also receive a new Hisuian evolution called Wyrdeer. It is said to be treated with respect by the locals of Hisui, and its fur makes for extremely luxurious and valuable garments. Wyrdeer looks somewhat similar to its pre-evolution from Pokémon Gold & Silver, but it adds a long, white beard-like patch of hair, making it resemble a Ghibli-esque forest spirit or Breath of the Wild’s King of the Mountain.

The trainer will also be able to ride on this Pokémon’s back but it is still unclear what type this Pokémon will be, or what its stats will look like.

Finally, the new evolution of Basculin is called Basculegion. This is yet another rideable Pokémon that allows players to traverse bodies of water with ease. It greatly resembles Basculin, except that it appears much larger and adds a Japanese calligraphic cloud-like tail that glows a light purple. It is said that this Pokémon is “possessed by the restless souls of other Basculin in their school that have perished during their journey upstream.”

Given the somewhat dark source of power for this Pokémon, it is safe to say that the Ghost-type will be introduced to its original Water-type. Originally, Basculin had two forms: Red-Striped Form, more predominant in Pokémon Black, and Blue-Striped Form, which featured more commonly in Pokémon White. Basculegion appears to have red stripes; a Blue-Striped version has not yet been revealed.
