New details have come out suggesting that Pokémon Legends: Arceus may not feature an open world as fans originally theorized, leading to backlash online against the game. Images and trailers of the upcoming release have brought on comparisons to The Legend of Zelda, leading to speculation that Pokémon Legends: Arceus would follow in the footsteps of Breath of the Wild and allow the player complete freedom in exploring the map. While this assumption may not prove to be true, it is confirmed that Arceus will shake up the Pokémon format in several other ways.

One of the biggest departures from previous Pokémon titles is the way the player will be able to interact with the creatures directly. Trainers will be able to catch some wild Pokémon without engaging in battle first, but will also be in danger of taking damage themselves if their own Pokémon aren’t present to protect them. New Noble Pokémon will also make an appearance, and trainers will be tasked with calming the creatures down as one of their primary goals. These Noble Pokémon appear to be boss fights and could possibly replace gym leader battles.

A tweet by Joe Merrick (via Dexerto), webmaster of Serebii.net, was the latest indication that Pokémon Legends: Arceus may be more linear than previously believed. In the tweet, Merrick suggested that the game “may not be full open world but rather segmented open areas like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Monster Hunter etc.” If this turns out to be the case, then players will only be free to explore smaller areas at a time and will need to unlock access to new zones, possibly by calming Noble Pokémon in each area.

It is coming increasingly clear that Pokémon Legends Arceus may not be full open world but rather segmented open areas like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Monster Hunter etc. separated into different areas like the Wild Area/Crown Tundra did I’m fine with this really. pic.twitter.com/llpCUUvQGx

While Game Freak, the developer of Pokémon, has not yet confirmed these rumors, there is a great deal of evidence for the claims. Merrick’s tweet included images from Arceus that showed a segmented map, and the game’s official website contains a statement implying that players will need to complete tasks to get access to different areas. The linearity of the game may not be known for certain until it actually releases, but the information that’s already known is enough to upset Pokémon fans eager for the freedom to explore the game’s world in full.

Since the announcement of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it’s been taken for granted that it would be the first open-world entry in the Pokémon series. Even if this doesn’t turn out to be the case, however, plenty of differences will separate the title from its predecessors — including a wider array of customization options. Whether or not the map is fully open from the start, Pokémon Legends: Arceus looks as if it will have enough new content to keep players occupied a long time after its release.
